Porsche to rename Boxster and Cayman

Porsche is to give new names to its two-door mid-engine sports cars, effective from 2016.

The Boxster and Cayman will be badged as the '718 Boxster' and '718 Cayman'. The Stuttgart sports car manufacturer's 718 designation is a reference to this type of sports car from the year 1957, which enjoyed much success in renowned car races of the period. The 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman will in the future, both will have equally powerful flat four-cylinder 'boxer' engines with turbocharging. The roadster will be positioned at a higher price level than the Coupe - as is the case for the 911 models.

The 718 model series is a continuation of the four-cylinder concept and the history of Porsche sports cars. In the late 1950s, the 718 - a successor to the Porsche 550 Spyder - represented the highest configuration level of the four-cylinder flat engine. The 718 took first place between 1959 and 1960 at the legendary Italian Targa Florio race in Sicily. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1958, the 718 RSK with its 142-hp four-cylinder engine scored a class victory.

Hyundai confirms new IONIQ eco-car

Hyundai has announced a new eco-friendly compact car, due for launch in 2016, will be called the IONIQ.

The car will be available with electric, plug-in petrol/electric hybrid, or petrol/electric hybrid powertrain - the first car from any manufacturer to offer these three powertrain options in a single body type. The IONIQ will combine 'class-leading fuel efficiency with a fun, responsive drive and attractive design, a unique mix not yet achieved by a hybrid vehicle' says Hyundai.

The new car's name references elements of its creation (with 'ion' representing an electrically-charged atom) and is based on an 'exclusive' new platform, made specifically for the car's multi-powertrain options. The chassis is optimised to deliver 'responsive handling' while remaining efficient in each of its three powertrain configurations.

In its fully-electric (EV) form, the IONIQ is powered by a high capacity, ultra-efficient lithium ion battery. The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version combines a fuel-efficient energy with battery power obtained by charging the car with electricity, boosting its range while cutting its emissions. Finally, the hybrid (HEV) utilises the petrol engine and motion of the car to charge the on-board battery, which returns enhanced efficiency by supplementing the engine's power.

Woong-Chul Yang, Head of Hyundai Motor R&D Center said, "Hyundai Motor has a heritage of building innovative, fuel-efficient vehicles, so we are proud to advance our eco-friendly car line-up with the introduction of IONIQ. Our vision for future mobility focuses on choice, with a variety of powertrain options to suit customers' varied lifestyles, without compromising on design or driving enjoyment. IONIQ embodies Hyundai Motor's vision to shift the automotive paradigm and future mobility; IONIQ is the fruit of our efforts to become the leader in the global green car market."

Following its world premiere in Korea in January, the IONIQ is due to be shown at the Geneva Motor Show, followed by the New York Auto Show, both in March 2016.

Works Renault team return to F1 as Infiniti-Red Bull split

Renault has confirmed a return to Formula 1 with its own team for the 2016 season, as Nissan, Infiniti and Red Bull Racing have reached mutual agreement to end their partnership a year early.

12-time Constructor's Champion Renault, with nearly 40 years in the sport, is an iconic brand in Formula 1. Work continues on finalising the terms to the acquisition of the Lotus F1 team in the 'shortest timeframe possible'. The Lotus F1 Team stood out as the ideal option for Renault having worked together for 15 years. As a full team, Renault will says it will take maximum benefit from its victories, adding 'the payback as an engine supplier proved to be limited'.

Renault has had uninterrupted involvement in Formula 1 for almost 40 years and has taken part in more than 600 grand prix, claiming 168 race wins, 12 Constructors' titles and 11 Drivers' crowns.

"Renault had two options: to come back at 100 percent or leave. After a detailed study, I have decided that Renault will be in Formula 1, starting 2016. The final details supplied by F1's main stakeholders gave us the confidence to accept this new challenge. Our ambition is to win, even if it will take some time," said Carlos Ghosn, Chairman and CEO, Renault.

Meanwhile, Nissan, Infiniti and the Red Bull Racing Formula One team have reached mutual agreements to discontinue the partnership between the two automotive brands and the F1 team at the end of December this year, one year earlier than originally stipulated.

Infiniti and Red Bull Racing started their commercial partnership in 2011 before Infiniti became the title sponsor of the team in 2013.

Porsche gives all-electric Mission E the go-ahead

The supervisory board at Porsche HQ have given the green light to the company's first 100 per cent electric car.

Confirming the Mission E project, Dr. Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board, at Porsche described the news as: "beginning a new chapter in the history of the sports car."

The Mission E concept car debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The electric sports car combines 'outstanding driving performance' with day-to-day practicality. The four-door car with four individual seats has a system power output of over 600 hp (440 kW) and will accelerate to 62mph in under 3.5 seconds while offering a range of more than 310 miles. Charged via an 800-volt charger unit specially developed for the car, the lithium-ion batteries integrated within the vehicle floor have enough power again for 80 percent of the range after just 15 minutes. The vehicle can optionally be 'refuelled' wirelessly by induction via a coil set into the garage floor.

With the Mission E project, Porsche says it is 'continuing to back sustainable growth' with more than 1,000 new jobs are being created. The company will be investing around 700 million euros in its main site. Over the next few years, a new paint shop and a new assembly plant will be built. The existing engine factory is also being expanded for the production of electric motors. In addition, the existing body shop is being enlarged.

Dr. Wolfgang Porsche, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Porsche AG: "With Mission E, we are making a clear statement about the future of the brand. Even in a greatly changing motoring world, Porsche will maintain its front-row position with this fascinating sports car."

Dr. Oliver Blume continued: "We are resolutely taking on the challenge of electric mobility. Even with solely battery-powered sports cars, Porsche is remaining true to its philosophy and offering our customers the sportiest and technologically most sophisticated model in this market segment."

The new vehicle is due to be launched at the end of the decade.

McLaren reveals 675LT Spider

McLaren has revealed the latest chapter in the history of the 'Longtail' name with the 675LT Spider.

The new Spider is only the second model to wear the LT badge and is 'in response to significant customer demand' according to McLaren. The preceding 675LT Coupe focused on light weight, enhanced aerodynamics, increased power and track-focused dynamics, and now McLaren has revealed the 'most focused, fastest and exhilarating open top model to ever wear a McLaren badge'.

The 675LT Spider is powered by a 3.8-litre twin turbo V8 powertrain from the Coupe sibling, with 675PS (666bhp) delivered at 7,100rpm and 700Nm (516lb ft) available between 5,000-6,500rpm. Acceleration from 0-62mph takes just 2.9 seconds, and 124mph is achieved in 8.1 seconds - giving away only 0.2 seconds to the more aerodynamically optimised and lighter Coupe - top speed is 203mph.

Staying true to the 'Longtail' ethos, established by the McLaren F1 in the late 1990s, the 675LT Spider has been developed with a focus on light weight and optimised aerodynamic performance. The special nature of the model is supported by the extensive use of carbon fibre for the bodywork. As with the 675LT Coupe, the front bumper with larger splitter and end plates, front under body, side skirts, side intakes, lower side intakes, rear bodyside lower, rear fenders, rear deck, rear bumper, diffuser and 'Longtail' Airbrake are all carbon fibre.

Lightweight components are also found throughout the powertrain and chassis, all contributing to a dry weight of just 1,270kg. This weight is a full 100kg lighter than the already lightweight 650S Spider, and gives a power-to-weight figure of 532PS per tonne. Due to the inherent strength of the carbon fibre MonoCell chassis, no further strengthening - and associated weight increase - has been added through the removal of the roof, and the 675LT Spider is only 40kg heavier than the Coupe, all due to the retractable roof system.

The retractable hard top stows below a colour-coded tonneau cover, and the engine remains visible through a lightweight vented polycarbonate engine cover. At the rear, the lightweight titanium crossover twin exhausts exit below the active 'Longtail' Airbrake which is 50 percent larger than other Super Series models. This is integrated in to the design of the flowing rear wings and despite the larger size, carbon fibre construction ensures weight is actually reduced.

The 675LT Spider is priced at £285,450 OTR and strictly limited to only 500 examples, with first deliveries in summer 2016.

New Volvo S90 to debut in Detroit

Volvo has revealed its new S90 premium saloon, ahead of a North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) debut.

Volvo said the S90 'marks a giant step forward' for the brand better known for its SUVs and estates. Equipped with new technologies, ranging from 'cutting-edge' safety to cloud-based apps and services, the S90 also comes equipped with an advanced semi-autonomous drive feature, Pilot Assist. The system gives gentle steering inputs to keep the car properly aligned within lane markings up to motorway speeds of around 80mph, no longer needing to follow another car. Pilot Assist is another step towards full autonomous drive.

"With the launch of the XC90, we made a clear statement of intent. We are now clearly and firmly in the game. With $11 USD billion of investment over the past five years, we have not only reimagined what Volvo Cars can be - we are now delivering on our promise of a resurgent and relevant Volvo Cars brand" said Hakan Samuelsson, President & CEO, Volvo Car Group.

The S90 will be powered by a T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain and come with 'one of the most luxuriously appointed interiors and connected infotainment systems in the large saloon segment', says Volvo.

"Our idea was to bring something entirely new to this rather conservative segment and deliver a visual expression that exudes leadership and confidence on the exterior. On the inside, we have taken the S90 to the next level, delivering a high-end luxury experience that promises comfort and control" said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Car Group.

The S90 also introduces a world-first function to City Safety - large animal detection - a system capable of detecting large animals such as elk, horses or moose, night or day. The technology offers an intuitive warning and brake support to help avoid a collision.

The Volvo S90 is set to be publicly unveiled at the NAIAS in Detroit in January.

Kia confirms all-new Optima pricing and spec

Kia has revealed its all-new Optima will cost from £21,495 OTR.

On sale from today there are four versions available, all powered by an upgraded EU6 version of Kia's 1.7-litre CRDi turbodiesel engine, now paired with either a six-speed manual or a new seven-speed (7DCT) dual-clutch auto transmission.

The 1.7-litre CRDi turbodiesel engine develops an improved 139bhp and increased torque of 340Nm. This represents increases of 5bhp and 15Nm over the previous version. With the Idle Stop & Go (ISG) engine stop/start system as standard, CO2 emissions of manual models are 14 per cent lower at 110g/km, while fuel economy improves to 67.3mpg. An even bigger improvement, says Kia, is the new 7DCT dual-clutch auto gearbox, which replaces the previous six-speed torque converter unit. Emissions drop by 25 per cent, to 116g/km, while fuel economy is now 64.2mpg.

As a result, benefit-in-kind taxation in manuals falls by three tax bands, while for the 7DCT the reduction is 42g/km and eight tax bands. With fuel consumption improved by almost 10mpg for manual models and more than 17mpg for the 7DCT automatics, fleet running costs will be 'dramatically lower'.

A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Optima, offering a commuter-friendly all-electric drive range with even lower emissions and greater taxation advantages, will be added later in 2016.

The first car in its class with a wireless charger for mobile devices, located in the base of the centre console, the Optima is also available with a 360-degree Around View Monitor for a bird's-eye view when manoeuvring, while a Smart Park Assist System automatically steers the car in and out of parallel or perpendicular parking slots.

There are initially three trim levels - badged 2, 3 and 4 - with GT-Line and GT versions to be added later in 2016. All versions are 'extensively equipped'. ISG - Kia's fuel-saving, emissions-reducing engine stop/start system, is standard.

Prices range from £21,495 OTR for the 1.7 CRDi 6-speed manual ISG 2 to £28,895 for the 1.7 CRDi 7-speed DCT ISG 4.

Facelifted Porsche 911 Turbo revealed

Porsche has unveiled the facelifted 911 Turbo and Turbo S ahead of the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in January.

Scheduled to make their world debut at NAIAS in Detroit, the range-topping 911 models now feature 20 hp (15 kW) more power, a 'sharper design and even broader everyday usability'.

The new generation 911 Turbo models adopt 'significant characteristics' borrowed from the latest Carrera models, supplemented by typical 911 Turbo special features, says Porsche. The newly-formed nose with side-mounted airblades and narrow LED front lights with double fillets give the front end a wider look.

In profile, the sports car runs on new 20-inch diameter wheels. On the 911 Turbo S the centre lock wheels now feature seven instead of ten double spokes. Also new are the wheel dimensions for the 911 Turbo: with 9J x 20 rims at the front and 11.5J x 20 rims at the rear, the new wheels are each half an inch wider than previously.

The rear body styling was also 'thoroughly revised' says Porsche with 'eye-catching' three-dimensional style rear lights with four-point brake lights and 'aura-style' illumination, also borrowed from the 911 Carrera series.

The exit openings for the exhaust system at the rear as well as the dual tailpipes were also redesigned as was the grille of the rear engine lid which now features three parts: the right and left sections have longitudinal louvres, and in the middle there is a separate cover for optimised air induction for the engine.

Available in both Coupe and Convertible versions, the twin-turbocharged, 3.8-litre flat-six engine in the 911 Turbo now has an output of 540 hp (397 kW). The 911 Turbo S now develops 580 hp (427 kW) courtesy of new turbochargers with larger compressors.

The engines now also have what is known as a 'dynamic boost function' to 'further raise engine responsiveness in dynamic operation'. The 911 Turbo S Coupe sprints to 62 mph in 2.9 seconds. Its top speed of 205 mph is eight mph higher than before. The 911 Turbo reaches the 62 mph mark in 3.0 seconds, and its top speed is 198 mph - three mph faster than the previous model. At the same time, fuel consumption has been reduced further with the coupes now returning 31 mpg, and the convertibles 30.4 mpg. This represents a gain of approximately two miles per gallon for all versions which has been delivered via 'further advances' in electronic engine and transmission management with revised gear change mappings.

The new 911 Turbo and Turbo S now feature, as standard, a new GT sport steering wheel - 360 mm in diameter and with a design adopted from the 918 Spyder. It includes a 'Mode Switch' - a rotary ring with stepped positions that is used to select one of the four modes Normal, Sport, Sport Plus or Individual. Another new feature of the Sport Chrono Package is the Sport Response button at the centre of the mode switch. Inspired by motor sport, at the push of a button it pre-conditions the engine and transmission for optimum responsiveness. In this state, the vehicle can produce instantaneous acceleration for up to 20 seconds, such as during an overtaking manoeuvre. An indicator in the instrument cluster in the form of a running timer shows the driver the elapsed time.

On sale now, prices for the new Porsche 911 Turbo start at £126,925 OTR or £135,766 OTR for the 911 Turbo Cabriolet. The 911 Turbo S costs £145,773 OTR and £154,614 OTR for the 911 Turbo S Cabriolet.

First customer deliveries are expected at the end of January 2016.

Audi unveils new R18 Le Mans racer

Audi has revealed its 2016 Le Mans 24 Hours car - the R18.

The most powerful and efficient race car Audi has ever built has been 'fundamentally re-designed' by Audi Sport. Featuring 'innovative aerodynamics' representing the next stage in lightweight design and a modified hybrid system with lithium-ion batteries for energy storage, there is also an efficiency-optimised TDI engine.

"With our new Audi R18, we're setting a clear signal: Audi continues to put the pedal to the metal in motorsport, deliberately relying on TDI - the world's most successful automotive efficiency technology - at Le Mans," says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich.

In the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) that will start at Silverstone (Great Britain) on April 17, Audi Sport Team Joest will be fielding two new Audi R18 cars. In the interest of maximum cost efficiency, Audi and its Group sister brand Porsche, have both agreed to each compete in the Le Mans 24 Hours, the WEC season's pinnacle event, with only two instead of the most recent three cars.

"We're proud about being able to again represent the Audi brand in 2016 with such an extensive commitment in motorsport," says Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. "The new Audi R18 marks a major step that we're expecting a lot of at Le Mans and in the WEC. In the DTM, we already had the strongest car in 2015. That's what we'd like to build upon. Plus, the high demand for the new Audi R8 LMS is equally gratifying as the many young talents that are interested in the Audi Sport TT Cup."

Range Rover Sport SVR tackles frozen Silverstone

Land Rover has tested a Rover Sport SVR on a frozen Silverstone replica track, near the Arctic Circle.

Land Rover Ambassador and polar explorer, Ben Saunders swapped his snowshoes for winter tyres to put the Sport SVR through its paces at a unique yet familiar test track. The full-scale replica of the Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit was carved in the snow on Lake Udjaur. With instruction from former rally champion, Finland's Minna Sillankorva, Saunders tackled driving on ice behind the wheel of Land Rover's performance flagship, the 550PS V8 Range Rover Sport, the most powerful Land Rover to date, which is capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds.

Ben Saunders, who has led expeditions to both the North and South Poles, said: "Obviously, I had an amazing day. It was my first time driving on ice and the most fun I've had on four-wheels. The performance of the Range Rover Sport SVR is simply breathtaking and its poise in the corners was astounding given the slippery conditions."

Features to enhance all-terrain performance, such as Land Rover's advanced Terrain Response 2 system, and permanent four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case, and a 50/50 percent torque split front-to-rear helped the polar explorer keep his Range Rover Sport SVR on track.

'Optimum traction' is further maintained with the aid of an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the centre differential, as well as the Torque Vectoring by Braking system which uses the SVR's brakes to constantly balance the distribution of engine torque between all four wheels during cornering. This system monitors the vehicle via the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) module as it accelerates through a corner, where sensors detect the onset of understeer.

Mike Cross, Chief Engineer Vehicle Integrity, said: "We pride ourselves on the all-terrain capability and composure of our vehicles, putting them through intensive hot and cold climate testing. The Range Rover Sport SVR is the most dynamic model we've ever produced and combining these qualities showcases the unique talents and expertise of our dedicated engineers."

Hyundai unveils 10th Anniversary Streetcar Mosaic

Hyundai has completed a 50-day driving challenge in London called A Streetcar Named Hyundai.

The idea involved driving, photographing and filming every central London street within the 2092 miles detailed in the famous Cabbie 'Knowledge'. Involving 127 participants, the challenge was created by London 2012's Ordnance Survey team to mark the 10-year anniversary of 'Hyundai Motor UK' and was completed in the Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell, the world's first commercially available hydrogen fuel cell car.

London taxi driver and knowledge teacher of 30 years, Tony Norris said: "The Cabbie Knowledge is world renowned, unique to London and takes an average of 3-4 years to complete. But, this is the first time that the entire six-mile radius has been routed in this way as one continuous drive."

Hyundai created entirely new software to capture the drive, which controlled the camera shutter based on the car's speed, distance travelled and angle of travel to frame the entire journey photographically. The camera took pictures every 6-7 metres delivering 503,919 images - that's 207,000 MB of data. The special ix35 was designed to capture over half a million photos throughout the journey with the images used to create a 6m x 2m mosaic, a digital continuous image of all London's streets as well as a 200.5 second time lapse video to mark the UK company's 2005 heritage.

The final mosaic image depicts Oxford Street, which was voted as the most iconic street in London, and will go on display at City Hall in March 2016, as part of London's Hydrogen Week.

Deputy Mayor for Environment and Energy Matthew Pencharz said: "Energy-efficient transport like these hydrogen fuel cell cars are key to helping improve the capital's air quality and reduce carbon emissions. I'm pleased that Hyundai's project has produced such an interesting portrait of our city with their new hydrogen technology."

Tony Whitehorn, Hyundai Motor UK's President and CEO commented: "We're incredibly proud of how far Hyundai has come in the UK in the short space of 10 years. During this time our brand has been completely transformed through innovation, design and technology - all of which encapsulate the Streetcar Named Hyundai challenge. We are delighted with the results."
