Toyota Yaris Hybrid gets Active and Sport models

Toyota has added Active and Sport models to its Hybrid Yaris range.

The Yaris Active becomes the new entry point to Toyota's hybrid technology. The five-door hatch comes equipped with dual-zone climate control, trip computer, power front windows and a split-folding rear seats. With 75g/km CO2 emissions and an official combined cycle fuel economy of 85.6mpg the low emissions mean no annual road tax (VED) to pay and, for London drivers, exemption from the congestion charge.

The Yaris Sport features rear privacy glass, 16-inch alloy wheels, rear spoiler and a rear pillar treatment that creates a floating roof effect. Other key features include climate control, power windows all round and the Toyota Touch 2 multimedia system with DAB radio, Bluetooth, touchscreen control and rear view camera. An optional Skyview panoramic roof can also be specified (£550). Using the larger alloy wheel brings a 'modest change' in the benchmark figures to 82g/km and 78.5mpg but Yaris Hybrid Sport retains the benefit of zero road tax.

The new Yaris Hybrid Active is launched with an on-the-road price tag of £14,995, including a special £300 introductory customer saving. The Yaris Hybrid Sport is priced at £16,695 OTR.

Terrafugia reveals new flying car

US-based manufacturer Terrafugia has unveiled plans for its latest flying car - the TF-X.

The company behind 2012s 'Transition' flying car has confirmed its plans for a four-seat, vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) hybrid electric aircraft. The TF-X will be able to recharge its batteries either from its engine or by plugging in to electric car charging stations. Carrying four people in car-like comfort the TF-X is designed to fit in a single car garage and is able to takeoff vertically from a level clearing of at least 100ft in diameter, and will have a non-stop flight range of at least 500 miles.

The company claims that operating a TF-X vehicle 'should be statistically safer than driving a modern automobile' as the flying car will be capable of automatically avoiding other air traffic, bad weather, restricted and tower-controlled airspace.

Terrafugia says learning how to safely operate the car should take an average driver no more than five hours, and that the owner will get significant freedom in flight. Controlled in a manner similar to steering a car, it can fly in either "manual" or "automatic" modes between approved landing zones or airports.

The flying car will have a backup full-vehicle parachute system which can be activated in an emergency if the operator believes the TF-X to be incapable of auto-landing. In an emergency, the TF-X can be landed in non-approved landing zones and will automatically notify authorities of the situation.

The first computer generated images reflect Terrafugia's updated 'Outer Mold Line' (OML) design for the TF-X, developed in collaboration with Ben Schweighart and Transportation/Automotive Designer Vedran Martinek. In addition, a one-tenth scale wind tunnel test model of the TF-X has been successfully developed based on the new OML, and will be tested at the MIT Wright Brothers wind tunnel, the same tunnel that was used to test models of Terrafugia's Transition. The wind tunnel test model will be used to measure drag, lift and thrust forces while simulating hovering flight, transitioning to forward flight and full forward flight.

Terrafugia claims the TF-X will be priced as low as possible - allowing the company to grow support and a customer base, with development of TF-X expected to last 8-12 years. Final pricing will be set much closer to delivery.

will.i.am and Lexus create Laser and sound spectacular

Pop-star will.i.am has shot a short film with Lexus that captures a live remix of his track #thatPOWER, using a stunt-driven Lexus NX.

It's part of a collaboration between the Grammy Award-winner and Lexus that encompasses the worlds of music, design and technology. Building on Lexus's Amazing in Motion campaign, will.i.am remixed his 2013 hit #thatPOWER using three NX SUV's, piloted by stunt drivers through hundreds of motion and sound-sensitive lights and lasers. The event was shot in the course of one night last week on a disused airstrip in Spain.

The unique interpretation was created live by the musician and global entrepreneur, using hundreds of motion and sound-sensitive lights and lasers and three Lexus NX crossovers, piloted by a team of top stunt drivers. will.i.am takes on the role of the frontman, 'battling against speed and rhythm' to conduct and navigate the Lexus NX by hitting a sequence of laser targets.

Commenting on the finished video, will.i.am said: "Working with the stunt guys to hit the laser targets in time with the music wasn't easy to get right but the result was awesome. The combination of technology, design and music in this project was out of this world."

The lighting and laser rig was created by Marshmallow Laser Feast (MLF), famous for its work with U2 and Coldplay, and took a team of 65 technicians more than week to install.

Barnaby Steel, MLF's Creative Director, explained how the concept worked: "Together with Lexus, we've created a huge musical game with three stunt drivers as the players and will.i.am as the conductor. Music is brought to life when the cars hit beams of light that are motion sensitive at the correct time and rhythm. It's basically like a giant laser harp with cars instead of fingers. The challenge for will.i.am and the drivers was to navigate the light points on tempo. When they fell off beat and triggered notes off tempo, the system had to restart."

Alain Uyttenhoven, Head of Lexus Europe, said: "We're projecting that the NX will represent one third of all Lexus sales across Europe this year, so it feels right that we've created something as bold as this event with will.i.am - something that truly embodies our brand philosophy of Amazing in Motion."

The NX, introduced last autumn, marks Lexus's entry into the mid-size premium crossover market. The range includes both the full hybrid NX 300h and the NX 200t, powered by Lexus's new 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine.

Renault ZOE now includes free domestic charging-box

Customers buying a new Renault ZOE will receive a 7kW (30A) wall-box charger fully installed at their home for free.

The free wall-box is part of a partnership between Renault and the British telematics company Chargemaster. Commenting on the partnership, David Martell, Chargemaster CEO, said: "We are delighted to be Renault's official charging partner in the UK. As government figures show, plug-in car sales are increasing as more and more motorists choose to reduce their emissions and their running costs."

The wall-box allows a full charge from zero to 100 per cent full in three to four hours, and is weatherproof so can be installed indoors or outside, with a choice of tethered or socketed cables. The wall-box provides sufficient range for a ZOE to travel up to 149 miles on the official NEDC cycle - comfortably more than most electric vehicle owners' daily mileage. The charger is protected by key controlled access and is covered by a four-year warranty - matching the vehicle manufacturer cover.

Once installed, owners are eligible to apply for a POLAR Network Card which grants access to UK's largest public charging infrastructure with over 3,000 charging points. The wall-box offer is available to retail customers who have access to off-street parking and an electricity supply.

Ben Fletcher, Electric Vehicle Product Manager, Renault UK commented: "We're delighted to be continuing our unique wall-box included offer, which allows us to ensure ZOE customers have the simplest and most convenient electric vehicle ownership experience. Chargemaster offer market leading technology and is dedicated to delivering great customer service so they're the perfect partner to help us deliver the offer."

Prices for the Renault ZOE start at £13,445 OTR after the Government's Plug-in Car Grant.

Motoring organisations campaign for schools to teach driving

Major motoring organisations and experts are backing the Government to include driving on the school curriculum.

A petition has been launched in a bid to help cut the high number of accidents involving newly qualified drivers on the UK's roads. Launched by Young Driver, the UK's largest provider of pre-17 driving lessons, the petition already has backing from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), the RAC, the Driving Instructors Association (DIA), the Association of British Insurers (ABI), the Motor Schools Association of Great Britain (MSA), Admiral, Goodyear and motoring presenter and expert, Quentin Willson.

One in five new drivers has an accident within six months of passing their test and road traffic accidents account for 25 per cent of the deaths of 15-19 year olds in the UK, compared to just 0.5 per cent of the overall adult population. Every year 400 people are killed in accidents involving young drivers.

The petition does not propose lowering the age at which people can take to the roads, but instead suggests youngsters should start to be taught about driving at school, via both practical and classroom based lessons.

Independent research undertaken on behalf of Young Driver showed that past pupils of the scheme, which takes students from age 11, are half as likely to have an accident when they do pass their test. Pilot studies in Europe have also shown a 40 per cent reduction among novice driver groups who trained at school.

Kim Stanton from Young Driver explains: "Learning to drive should be done over a long period of time, and from a young age, when pupils are more receptive to safety messages. Evidence-based research shows that road safety messages are better absorbed by children in their early teens rather than at driving age. By having this take place at school it can be made inclusive for all. We urge people to sign this petition so we can get this issue in front of the people with the power to change things."

Mark Lewis, Director of Standards for the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), added: "The high number of accidents and the sad loss of life as a result of unprepared young drivers urgently needs to be tackled. Quite obviously the driving education that youngsters are currently receiving is inadequate. At the IAM we can help prepare people for more advanced driving situations once they have passed their test, but there needs to be more done at an earlier stage. Learning such an important skill shouldn't potentially be done and dusted in a few short months. That's why I strongly believe people should sign this petition and get the subject debated in the House of Commons."

Quentin Willson added: "Both my son, age 16, and daughter, age 11, have started having driving lessons with Young Driver. I think it's vital - it's a road safety revolution in the making. If we could get this on the curriculum, so the opportunity was open to all, it would have huge ramifications in terms of the safety of our young people. And, as both a father and road user, that's certainly something I want to back. 100,000 signatures could help save 400 precious lives every year."

Kensington Council plans Supercar crackdown

Supercar owners could face prosecution in London as the local Council aims to crackdown on 'the problem of supercars'.

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea this week begun a consultation on introducing a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) - in response to requests from residents in the Brompton and Hans Town ward for the Council to address the issue of high performance cars speeding in the streets, drivers revving engines, and vehicles causing obstructions.

In recent times, the summer months have seen an influx of Supercars - including Lamborghinis, Ferraris and Bugattis - brought over by wealthy Middle Easterners as they arrive to stay in their London properties. This results in much annoyance to local residents as the traffic on roads around Harrods becomes more like a luxury moving motor show.

A PSPO is a new measure, created by the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, which is intended to deal with activities carried out in a public space that have a detrimental effect to the local community's quality of life. This PSPO would enable the Council to impose restrictions within a particular area and the aim is to stop individuals or groups committing antisocial behaviour in public spaces.

Cllr Tim Ahern, Cabinet Member for Environment, Environmental Health and Leisure, said: "I know there has been a lot of coverage of expensive cars racing around Knightsbridge and also parking up and revving their engines. We want to take steps to discourage these drivers from their antisocial behaviour."

However Alex Prindiville, owner of Prindiville, central London's only supercar showroom commented: "The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea's proposal to draft a new set of anti-social behaviour laws to deal specifically with the 'menace' of wealthy Middle Eastern supercar drivers is heavy-handed and unnecessary". He goes on to say "Existing laws are already perfectly adequate to deal with the minority of supercar drivers who step out of line, provided they are properly enforced."

Petrol stations could become extinct

British motorists could no longer have to rely on the conventional petrol station, with more than 90 per cent of electric vehicles being charged at home.

That's according to new analysis from plug-in vehicle campaign 'Go Ultra Low' who also claim that total charging volumes have almost tripled since 2014 - a 163 per cent increase - according to new usage data from infrastructure provider Chargemaster.

Coupled with bumper uptake of plug-in vehicles - more than 14,500 were registered in the first half of 2015 - the new findings point to the potential for motorists to lessen their reliance on petrol stations by opting for hassle-free electric-car ownership.

Hetal Shah, Head of Go Ultra Low suggests that motorists should consider updating their approach to car ownership: "The reasoning is simple - why should motorists have to go out of their way, regularly spending time at petrol stations, when it is easy to 'refuel' from the comfort of their own home, simply by plugging in an electric car? EV-sceptics sometimes question the usability of the UK's roadside charging infrastructure, but this new data indicates that it is an important, but not critical, facility for most electric vehicle owners."

Government subsidies of up to £700 are available for the installation of fast, efficient home-chargepoints with EV drivers also able to cut tax and fuel costs by around £800 per year versus the average car on the road, with driving costing from around 2p a mile compared to around 10-12p per mile for a typical petrol or diesel car. The savings continue to stack up as plug-in vehicles also need less maintenance and can be parked for free in many places.

Go Ultra Low also says, with the average commute in the UK less than 10 miles, the majority of plug-in car and van drivers are able to charge entirely at home or work, only occasionally using public chargepoints as a back-up or additional top-up for longer journeys.

As well as only commuting short distances, more than a third of UK motorists never travel more than 80 miles in a single trip, comfortably within the 100-mile range of most pure electric vehicles. For those who regularly need to travel further or don't have a driveway for home-charging, some plug-in hybrids can travel around 700 miles without needing to refuel.

Motorists driving beyond their car's range can make use of more than 7,500 public chargepoints in 3,000 locations nationwide. This back-up infrastructure is set to grow further with government planning to complete the installation of 500 rapid chargers in key locations, such as motorway service stations, by the end of 2015. In total, £32 million of infrastructure support is due to be implemented between now and 2020, while £8 million has been set aside for public chargepoints. Crucially, this funding also makes allowance for motorists' primary charging locations, with £15 million available for the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme.

Go Ultra Low is a campaign to help motorists understand the benefits, cost savings and capabilities of the variety of new ultra low emission vehicles on the market. The collaborative campaign is the first of its kind, bringing together a consortium of leading car manufacturers: Audi, BMW, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Renault, Toyota, and Volkswagen alongside the Government and Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

New Jaguar F-Pace tested to the extreme

Jaguar has been busy testing its new F-Pace in extreme conditions - from -40 degrees to plus +50.

Taking the new SUV to the searing heat and dust of Dubai as well as the ice and snow of Northern Sweden, the new F-Pace has been subjected to one of the most demanding test programmes the company has ever devised ensuring that every system functions perfectly, even under the most extreme conditions.

At Jaguar Land Rover's test facility in Arjeplog, Northern Sweden, average winter temperatures rarely exceed -15 degrees and often plummet to -40 degrees. The 60km of purpose-built handling tracks, mountain climbs, inclines, split-friction straights and off-road areas are ideal for optimising the calibration of the all-wheel drive system, Dynamic Stability Control and technologies such as Jaguar's revolutionary All-Surface Progress Control. The work done here makes sure that, whether on asphalt, snow or ice, the F-Pace delivers the connected steering feel and agility 'fundamental to Jaguar dynamics DNA'.

In Dubai, ambient temperatures can exceed 50 degrees in the shade. When vehicles are left out in direct sunlight, cabin temperatures can soar to 70 degrees - exactly what's needed to ensure that everything from climate control systems to infotainment touchscreens function perfectly in extremes of heat and humidity. And while the test engineers can relax in air-conditioned comfort as they drive in city traffic, this part of the test cycle is designed to place the cooling systems under very high load through a combination of high ambient temperatures and low airflow.

Andrew Whyman, Vehicle Programme Director, Jaguar F-Pace said: "We developed the F-Pace to offer the ride, handling and refinement demanded from a Jaguar, together with exceptional levels of ability and composure on all surfaces and in all weathers. Just as we paid obsessive attention to detail over the engineering of every single component, we've exhaustively tested the F-Pace in the most challenging conditions to ensure that it will exceed the expectations of our customers around the world".

The SUV has also been driven over gravelled mountain passes, marking the first time that a Jaguar test programme has included this uniquely challenging environment.

The new F-Pace will debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

Ferrari reveals new 488 Spider

Ferrari has unveiled the new 488 Spider, its most powerful mid-rear-engined V8 convertible to date.

Powered by a 3902 cc turbo-charged V8, that debuted recently in the 488 GTB, the powerplant pumps out 660bhp at 8000rpm. The 488 Spider can cover the 0 to 62 mph sprint in 3 seconds flat and from 0 to 124 mph in 8.7 seconds. The new engine not only offers 98bhp more powerful than the previous naturally-aspirated V8 but also has lower CO2 emissions.

Ferrari says the turbo V8 has a unique character, delivering increasing levels of power right across the rev range, completely eliminating the traditional turbo lag with a throttle response time of just 0.8 seconds. This is thanks to a sophisticated production process made possible by Maranello's facilities - which are shared with the F1 team - to help transfer racing technologies to road cars.

Ferrari claims it was the first manufacturer to introduce the RHT (Retractable Hard Top) on a car of this particular architecture, ensuring lower weight (-25 kg) and better cockpit comfort compared to the classic fabric soft-top. This model has its own distinctive soundtrack created using solutions such as exhaust headers with longer, equal-length piping and a flat-plane crankshaft. It was also further enhanced, says Ferrari, by an in-depth study of harmonics and tonality at different engine speeds. The sound is described as 'seductive but never invasive' when the top is dropped, with both volume and clarity increasing as the engine instantly responds to the accelerator pedal and revs rise, 'reinforcing the sensation of massive performance'.

This is also the most aerodynamically efficient Ferrari spider ever built, thanks to the introduction of several innovative devices, including a blown spoiler and an aerodynamic underbody incorporating vortex generators. The Ferrari Styling Centre completely reworked the aesthetics compared to the 488 GTB. Designed around the concept of the retractable hard top, the 488 Spider has a spaceframe chassis made of 11 different aluminium alloys. This yields the same torsional rigidity and beam stiffness figures as the coupe, improving the chassis' performance by 23 per cent over that of its predecessor. The RHT folds backwards in two overlapping sections to rest flush on the engine, taking 14 seconds for the top to fully retract or deploy.

The Ferrari 488 Spider will make its world premiere at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September, 2015.

New Mitsubishi L200 Series 5 pick-up

Mitsubishi has revealed its new L200 Series 5 pick-up.

Inheriting the DNA of its predecessors, it's an entirely new vehicle from the ground up, with 'significant improvements in 330 areas'. The result, says Mitsubishi is the 'ultimate vehicle for commercial duty, combined with SUV-like refinement in quality and dynamic performance'.

The Japanese automaker describes the new pick-up as just as competent climbing up a mountain or navigating a building site, as it is comfortable on a motorway or around city streets, and claims the L200 Series 5 is the only pick-up that can be driven permanently in 2WD and 4WD on tarmac and off-road.

Mitsubishi's 'J' curve body design between the cabin and cargo area is not just for visual styling as it allows for a 25 degree recline in the rear seats, making for a comfortable 4 or 5-passenger 'long journey' space. It also allows for a compact wheelbase, aiding manoeuvrability and giving the all new L200 Series 5 its 'best-in-class' turning radius of 5.9 metres and steering that can go from lock to lock in 3.8 turns (down from 4.3 in the previous generation L200). Interior width has also increased, as have the sizes of the driver and front passenger seats.

Ride comfort has been 'elevated to SUV levels' through the introduction of a fully revised suspension, including six shock absorbing body mounts that are more than double the size of those in the previous model. These absorb noise and vibration from the road, contributing to a smooth and quiet cabin experience. Torsional rigidity is 7 per cent greater than in its predecessor, contributing to a 'significant improvement' in handling and stability.

Mitsubishi says the new Series 5 has the largest carrying capacity of any pick-up, largely due to the extensive use of high-tensile steel in both cabin and cargo bed, building in strength without increasing overall vehicle weight. The result is a pick-up with the best in class combined load bed capacity and full towing capability of 4.1 tonnes.

The new MIVEC turbo diesel engine offers 42.8 mpg allowing the L200 Series 5 to travel 685 miles on a full tank of fuel while emitting 169g/km CO2. Power and torque are increased to 178bhp and 430Nm at 2,500 rpm, delivering performance through a new 6-speed manual transmission or automatic. At 10.4 seconds, L200 Series 5 is two seconds quicker to 62 mph than its predecessor.

On board Active Stability & Traction Control (ASTC) prevents wheel slip by controlling unstable vehicle movements. It individually brakes spinning wheels and controls power distribution from the engine, if traction is lost on slippery surfaces or when negotiating steep slopes.

Seven SRS airbags have been incorporated into the cabin to protect the vehicle's occupants, and the steering wheel retracts in a collision. Additionally, the new model is fitted with lane departure warning, trailer stability assist, hill start assist and ABS with electronic brake force distribution.

Initially available in double cab, prices for the all-new Mitsubishi L200 Series 5 start from £19,749 for the 4Life, £20,749 for the Titan, £23,049 for the Warrior and £23,799 for the top of the range Barbarian and will go on sale in September.

Traffic and breaking down are biggest worry on holiday

A new survey has revealed that traffic congestion, at 59 per cent and breaking down at 44 per cent are the biggest worries on long car journeys.

That's according to latest research from Europcar, one of the leading car hire services in Europe, who surveyed reliability concerns for drivers of older vehicles as the Summer get-away begins.

It found 56 per cent of motorists driving cars aged six years or older pack a picnic before taking a long journey, however only 12 per cent get their car serviced ahead of a big trip. With the average age of cars on Britain's roads now over seven years, Europcar is highlighting the advantages of car hire as a safe, reliable and flexible alternative for UK families.

"It's clear from our research that breaking down is a major concern for drivers, but it seems that many take long trips in older vehicles without doing some of the basic car maintenance checks", said Ken McCall, Managing Director, Europcar UK Group.

"Our research revealed that the top three car checks before a long journey are fuel (82 per cent), tyres (65 per cent) and windscreen wash (64 per cent). Interestingly checking the engine oil is topped up (63 per cent) came lower than checking the windscreen wash - and checking the water coolant came even further down the list with only just over half (56 per cent) of respondents saying they do this before embarking on a long journey. We were also interested to find that only just over a third (37 per cent) said they check all the light bulbs are working, despite this being a legal requirement on UK roads."

The other challenge when planning to use the family car for long Summer trips is finding room for all the baggage and passengers. The Europcar research revealed that only 30 per cent of motorists check the car has been safely loaded before heading off.

"We focus on providing peace of mind by operating a fleet of vehicles generally less than 8 months old. All vehicles on the Europcar fleet come with roadside assistance, at no extra cost, plus there are distinct fuel efficiency benefits of driving a younger car" continued Ken McCall.

Fiat-Chrysler recalls 1.4 million cars over hacking scare

Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has issued a voluntary safety recall to update software in approximately 1,400,000 US based vehicles.

This follows a recent stunt by a US technology magazine that managed to 'hack' into a Jeep Cherokee and control it using laptops. The 'remote manipulation' was carried out with a compliment driver behind the wheel, however it has forced FCA to review the safety of its software, resulting in the recent patch update.

Effecting cars equipped with certain radios, the recall 'aligns with an ongoing software distribution that insulates connected vehicles from remote manipulation, which, if unauthorised, constitutes criminal action' says Fiat-Chrysler.

FCA US has also applied network-level security measures to prevent the type of remote manipulation demonstrated going forward. These measures - which required no customer or dealer actions - block remote access to certain vehicle systems and were fully tested and implemented within the cellular network this month.

The Company says it is unaware of any injuries related to software exploitation, nor is it aware of any related complaints, warranty claims or accidents - independent of the media demonstration. Affected vehicles are equipped with 8.4-inch touchscreen, and include the 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Cherokee SUVs as well as 2013-2015 MY Dodge Viper specialty vehicles, Chrysler 200, Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedans and Dodge Challenger sports coupes to name a few.

Customers affected by the recall will receive a USB device that they may use to upgrade vehicle software, which provides additional security features independent of the network-level measures. Alternately, customers may visit http://www.driveuconnect.com/software-update/ to input their Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) and determine if their vehicles are included in the recall.

FCA says the software manipulation addressed by this recall required unique and extensive technical knowledge, prolonged physical access to a subject vehicle and extended periods of time to write code. Fiat-Chrysler says the company conducting this campaign 'out of an abundance of caution'.

Caterham continues UK expansion with new dealers

Caterham has appointed two new dealers - one in the north and one in the south - as it continues its UK expansion.

Oakmere Motor Group in Cheshire and Williams Automobiles near Bristol have been signed up by the brand to sell its full range of lightweight sportscars, with demonstrator cars already in place at both dealerships.

Both businesses are already well-versed in the selling, servicing and maintenance of used Caterham Sevens but will now stock the recently-extended range of new cars, from Seven 160 to Seven 620R.

Caterham says the company has steadily been growing its sales network both in the UK and internationally in the last few years with more UK dealers expected to be added in the coming months.

Caterham's Chief Commercial Officer, David Ridley, said: "Last year was a record year for Caterham in terms of export sales as demand increased for our products. But, while we are intent on growing our business globally, we have not forgotten our roots and the expansion of the UK network is a reflection of the importance we place on our customers here at home."

Oakmere Motor Group is a family-owned and run business based in Northwich, near Oulton Park race track. For several years, it was one of the largest TVR dealerships in the country and has an excellent understanding of hand-built British sportscars.

Managing director, Jonathan Jarratt, said: "I am passionate about Caterham, having personally owned a number of them over the years and I know our staff share my passion. We have sold and maintained many Caterhams over the years and are therefore no strangers to keeping them in tip top shape. We are planning a launch event very soon but, in the meantime, we would love to see as many Caterham owners and enthusiasts at our dealership as possible and would be delighted to give them the guided tour; the kettle is always on."

Ford develops ultra clean air filtration system

Ford has introduced a new filtration system that offers drivers cleaner air than in rural locations, even when stuck in city traffic.

The new air filtration system introduced in the all-new Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy utilises activated charcoal - similar to advanced gas masks, respirators, and spacesuits. The air quality sensor detects carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide levels outside the car and shuts down incoming air. As required, it also automatically switches on the advanced filtration and air recirculation. The new filter is 50 per cent more effective than its predecessor at blocking ultra-fine particles that are more than one thousand times smaller than the width of a human hair.

Blocking almost all nitrogen dioxide - a key trigger of asthma - and up to 99 per cent of pollen, and gaseous pollutants and odours, Ford found during testing that the concentrations of nitrogen dioxide and particle concentrations inside the car were equal to or lower than was the case outside the car in rural locations - even when test vehicles were driven in the city, on the motorway, in traffic jams and through tunnels.

Sneezing while driving at 60 mph may result in 'driving blind' for up to 20 metres. More than a quarter of Europeans suffer from hay fever, according to Ford with sufferers a third more likely to be involved in a collision.

"At Ford, we aspire to improve people's lives through innovation, whether it be advanced lighting technologies that better highlight potential dangers or an advanced filtration system that pumps ultra clean air into the vehicle's cabin," said Ken Washington, vice president, Ford Research and Advanced Engineering.

"Ford's filtration technology is of a quality one would only usually expect in luxury cars. The team drove test vehicles in areas of heavy congestion and concentrated pollution, such as tunnels and urban areas to prove out the system," said Volker Scheer, technical expert, Environment and Health, Ford of Europe."

Audi unveils limited A8 Edition 21

Audi is celebrating over 20 years of its luxury A8 saloon, with a bespoke model - the A8 Edition 21.

Featuring a blend of design, technology and luxury from the recently revised A8 range, the A8 Edition 21 will be available in standard and Long Wheelbase formats. Featuring a tailored selection of interior and exterior styling enhancements setting this special model apart, these include the recently introduced Sport styling package. Creating a look that references the flagship S8 model, it comprises redesigned front and rear bumpers as well as pronounced side sills, and is normally reserved for standard wheelbase A8 models. Adaptive Audi Matrix LED headlights - which debuted as an option for the new generation A8 are also fitted as standard in conjunction with LED rear lights and dynamic indicators.

Also unique to this model are 20-inch double spoke alloy wheels with a titanium-look finish that complement the four exterior colour options, which include the Daytona grey pearl effect shade that is only normally available for the 520 PS S8. Privacy glass from the B-pillar rearwards is also standard.

Building on the 'already extensive' SE Executive specification, which was recently further enhanced for A8 models, the Edition 21 includes a special interior design package from the Audi exclusive selection. Uniquely fitted as standard to this version, the package is available in two colour combinations; cognac brown with black contrasting stitching or black leather with red contrasting stitching. Comfort front sports seats with memory function, 22-way adjustability and integrated pneumatic lumbar and side bolster support are fitted as standard. A black cloth headlining and three-spoke multi-function steering wheel complete the interior enhancements. Illuminated door sill plates bearing the 'Edition 21' emblem add another degree of exclusivity, says Audi.

All Edition 21 models also gain access to the Audi connect portfolio of telephone and internet-based services to complement their HDD-based satellite navigation, plus a BOSE surround sound system in addition to the standard items fitted to SE Executive models. These include the Audi parking system advanced with reversing camera, a power-operated boot lid with hands-free opening and powered door closure.

Propelling the Edition 21 is an EU6-compliant 3.0-litre V6 TDI engine which produces 262PS and 580Nm of torque between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm. Power is channelled to the road via an 8-speed tiptronic transmission linked to quattro permanent all-wheel drive, and acceleration to 62 mph takes 5.9 seconds. For long-wheelbase models, this increases slightly to 6.1 seconds, and both are capable of reaching an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. Combined fuel consumption and emissions stand at up to 47.9mpg and CO2 emissions of 155 g/km in the standard wheelbase, rising to 159g/km and 47.1mpg for long wheelbase models.

Priced at £72,525 OTR and £76,490 OTR for the Long Wheelbase, a limited run of just 121 cars will be built for UK customers, and are available to order now, for a November 2015 delivery.

Skoda reveals doggy seat belt

Skoda has developed a range of accessories designed to keep dogs safe and secure on the move.

The range, developed using Skoda's 'Simply Clever' philosophy, combines the latest in canine-cosy materials with high-tech structures to protect even the most boisterous of hounds. Available through Skoda retailers, the Dog Safety Belt offers the simplest solution for a hound that likes to go walkies on the move. With a simple clunk-click of this specially-developed belt (which also clicks into a lead for seamless car-to-walk manoeuvres) even the most unruly of mutts will be restrained for when the roads get twisty. The doggy seat belt comes in four sizes - from S to XL - meaning that everything from a Chihuahua to a Great Dane benefit. Prices start from £50 for the small version, with medium, large and XL costing £65, £75 and £85 respectively.

As millions of owners will testify, dogs are experts in embedding hair and mud in a car interior. Which is why Skoda has developed a Backseat Protector designed to minimise the impact of malting, muddy hounds. The Skoda Backseat Protector (£30) does exactly what the name suggests. By attaching to the front and rear headrests, the protector forms a cosy hammock area. The material is water-resistant and has a non-slip surface to further increase safety on the move.

For those who like to treat their dogs to their own private grounds at the back of their estate, the Skoda dog guard is available for Fabia, Octavia and Superb estate models, with the grille 'light and easy to install' says Skoda, and allows the driver a clear view of the road behind. Prices start at £105.50.

Other accessories designed to keep owners and hounds happy include a range of tailor-fitted protective mats and inserts. The rubber boot mat is moulded exactly to the shape of the boot-floor and fits snugly, while the accessories range also includes a robust Plastic Protective Liner for the boot.
