New TVR to be built in Wales

TVR has revealed its new Sports car will be built in Wales.

The resurgent British sports car manufacturer confirmed its new production facility will be located in the Ebbw Vale Enterprise Zone in South Wales. The Welsh Government will also invest in the car maker, further enhancing this exciting manufacturing project which represents over £30 million of capital expenditure over the next five years.

The new TVR project, which was announced in early 2015, has already secured in excess of 350 deposits for the launch edition car, which features an innovative design and styling that ‘maintains the distinctive TVR DNA'. The chassis and body has been designed by Gordon Murray of Gordon Murray Design Ltd. and will be the first production car to be manufactured using their new iStream assembly process. Power is provided by a Cosworth tuned and enhanced V8 engine while F1 inspired, ‘ground-effect’ technology is also a feature. The Welsh factory will be busy fulfilling orders that already run through to the end of 2018.

Currently TVR is looking at several specific options for the precise location of the factory, the outcome of which will be the subject of a separate announcement in the coming weeks. Les Edgar, Chairman of TVR said: “This is a fantastic opportunity both for TVR and the Welsh Government. South Wales is becoming a major hub for automotive and motorsport technology and development and the area is a serious opportunity for business development and job creation. Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR tested

The Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR has successfully completed the official TCR comparison tests in Valencia.

Prior to this, the first five of 20 cars were delivered to two customers. The cars were then put through their paces during two days of testing at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo. Engstler Motorsport from Germany and the W-Racing Team from Belgium, who line up in the TCR International Series in 2016, took to the racetrack for the first time with the new 330-hp touring car.

As well as familiarising themselves with the new car, the test programme also included the obligatory Balance-of-Performance test (BOP). This meant performance tests on the test stand, car measurements to determine the car’s centre of gravity, acceleration and deceleration tests with varying amounts of ballast and an official TCR driver at the wheel. The data gathered in the BOP is analysed and used to achieve a similar level of performance between the cars of different manufacturers, thus ensuring everyone has the same chance of winning. However, this task proved far from easy as heavy rain repeatedly disrupted the two test days.

In total, eight customer sports teams will field the Golf GTI TCR in 2016: Engstler Motorsport, Kai Jordan, D&T Drive & Training (all Germany), W-Racing Team, Gtps Delahaye Racing Team (both Belgium), Milo Racing (Luxembourg), Gusto Technik Performance (Hong Kong) and Novaplus Gestao Desportiva (Portugal). The racing Golf will start in five TCR championships: in the international series, the Benelux and Asia series as well as in the German and Portuguese championships.

Eduard Weidl, Head of Customer Sports said: “The comparison tests with the Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR went well. We are happy, but we also know that we still have some work ahead of us – particularly when it comes to the cars’ traction. As such, the tests were very helpful and revealing. The Engstler team completed more than 50 laps with its three cars on both days, allowing it to make some valuable findings. The feedback received from the customer sports teams and drivers on the Golf GTI TCR was certainly very positive.”

Jordi Gene, test and development driver added: “The Golf GTI TCR is a real racer. Compared to last year’s concept car, we have made good progress in many areas. Thanks to the new six-speed sequential racing gearbox, an improved braking system, and modifications to the aerodynamics, the Golf is now even better to drive. We will obviously continue to work on the car throughout the season, where the regulations allow it, in order to ensure that we improve continuously. As far as performance is concerned, I am sure that the customer sports teams will be able to challenge for the championship in the various TCR series.”

Maserati supports the Royal Academy of Arts

Maserati has been confirmed as the official partner of the Royal Academy of Arts new exhibition - In the Age of Giorgione.

Celebrating art and style, which is at the heart of the luxury Italian car manufacturer, Maserati will be supporting the Italian-focussed exhibition, which runs until 5th June 2016.

This unique exhibition is a focused survey of the Venetian Renaissance during the first decade of the sixteenth century, a pivotal period, which laid the foundations for the Golden Age of Venetian painting. Works by Giorgione, Titian and Giovanni Bellini, among others are presented in the exhibition, offering visitors the opportunity to view these major works of art, first-hand.

Peter Denton, Region Manager for Maserati North Europe, said, “We are absolutely delighted to be partnering with the Royal Academy of Arts. Art has always been at the heart of the Maserati brand; one of the founding Maserati brothers, Mario, was an artist by trade and it was he who chose the iconic Trident symbol as the Maserati emblem you see on our cars today. Over 100 years since then, it’s fantastic to be merging the worlds of Italian art and car design together.”

Christopher Le Brun, President of the Royal Academy of Arts added, “This is a fantastic partnership for the Royal Academy of Arts. It is a rarity for the Royal Academy to work with automotive brands and to have the iconic manufacturer Maserati onboard working so closely with an exhibition is very exciting.”

In the Age of Giorgione brings together around 50 works from major public institutions and private collections from across Europe and the United States.

Tickets are available daily at the RA or online at www.royalacademy.org.uk.

Mercedes-AMG reveals GLC 43 4MATIC

Mercedes-AMG has added a sporty GLC 43 4MATIC to its mid-size SUV range.

Offering an AMG model in the mid-size SUV segment for the first time, the 367hp, 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine is mated to an automatic transmission 9G-TRONIC with shortened shift times for 0-62 mph time of 4.9 seconds and an electronically governed top speed of 155 mph. The 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission is especially matched to the demands of the GLC 43 4MATIC with model-specific software to reduce the shift times. The multiple downshift allows even faster short bursts of speed, while the double-declutching function in the “Sport” and “Sport Plus” transmission modes makes for an even more emotive driving experience.

The ‘precise’ AMG speed-sensitive sports steering and the 4MATIC rear-biased torque distribution of 31 percent at the front axle to 69 percent at the rear, offer ’substantial contribution’ to the agile driving experience. The AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with adaptive damping adjustment is available in three levels, with the mode selectable via a button.

The design has been enhanced with silver chrome coloured and high-gloss black features. It builds on the AMG Exterior line with a diamond radiator grille featuring chrome-plated pins, a louvre in high-gloss black with inserts in high-gloss chrome and the AMG lettering. The sportily air intakes in the AMG front apron feature fins in silver chrome. Down below, the silver chrome front splitter ensures an optimal flow of air to the cooling modules.

High-gloss black-painted, high-sheen 19-inch AMG 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels dominate the side view. There are also high-gloss black door mirror caps and the silver-coloured “BITURBO 4MATIC” lettering on the front wings. At the rear, two four-pipe chromed tailpipe trims and AMG-specific rear apron sports trim in silver chrome have been added.

The interior includes numerous specially designed details while the multifunction sports steering wheel in black leather features a flattened bottom section and red contrasting topstitching. The driver and front passenger find a secure position in the sports seats even when driving at speed, thanks to the improved lateral support. The upholstery in black ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA microfibre boasts its own seat upholstery layout plus red topstitching.

With two large round dials and central colour multifunction 5.5-inch display, the AMG instrument cluster places all the important information in the driver’s field of vision. The ECO display supports a fuel-saving driving style. Dials in a chequered-flag look and the distinctive typography lend the large displays an especially sporty touch.

The new Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4MATIC will be revealed at the New York International Auto Show, and goes on sale 4 April.

McLaren adds track-dedicated 570S GT4 and 570S Sprint

McLaren has announced two new track-dedicated models will join the Sports Series range - the 570S GT4 and the 570S Sprint.

Developed in conjunction with McLaren GT motorsport division, the 570S GT4 will now enter a season-long development programme in the British GT championship with customer team, Black Bull Ecurie Ecosse.

Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive Officer, McLaren Automotive explained: ‘As with road-going models wearing a McLaren badge, the 570S GT4 and 570S Sprint models are about being an engaging and exciting drive. The launch of the Sports Series has broadened McLaren to a new audience, introducing technologies to the sports car market and to a new group of customers. The 570S GT4 is doing the same in the motorsport world, and will bring the opportunity to own and race a McLaren – previously limited to a very small number of people – to a much wider group.’

The track-only 570S GT4 shares the carbon fibre MonoCell II chassis architecture with the other models in the Sports Series. The bodywork is formed over wider track both front and rear to accommodate centre-locking cast magnesium alloy wheels shod with slick Pirelli racing tyres. Two-way adjustable motorsport dampers with coil-over springs are fitted front and rear, and an on-board air jacking system is fitted as standard.

With a 'pure focus on laptimes', the 570S GT4 features a unique aerodynamic package which includes a GT4-specification high level rear wing, mounted on aluminium pylons, a larger front splitter and reprofiled floor assembly. An additional front centre high temperature radiator sits below a GT3-inspired bonnet with radiator exit ducts. These upgrades have been designed to optimise the aerodynamic performance and cooling of the 570S GT4 to ensure it is able to perform in the ‘harshest race conditions’.

The McLaren designed and developed 3.8-litre twin turbo V8 M838TE engine is carried over from the road-going Sports Series model. The seven-speed shift gearbox is also familiar to the other models in the range, transferring power to the track via the rear wheels.

Black Bull Ecurie Ecosse will run one example of the 570S GT4 alongside the confirmed entry of the 650S GT3 with Factory Driver Rob Bell alongside Alaisdair McCaig. Driver details for the season will be announced shortly.

The 570S GT4 will make its public development debut at the opening round of the British GT Championship at Brands Hatch, UK over the weekend 16-17 April. It will be eligible for all GT4 homologated championships globally from the 2017 season, and is priced from £159,900 (ex works).

Further details for the 570S Sprint, including pricing, will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Caterham Seven immortalised in LEGO

Caterham’s Seven will be available in LEGO form for the first time when a brand new set is launched later this year.

The set will allow LEGO and car fans alike the chance to build their very own miniature version of the lightweight British sportscar. The concept of a Caterham Seven was submitted to the LEGO ‘Ideas’ system. After receiving 10,000 votes of support from LEGO fans, the ideas are then considered by the LEGO Review team, which selects the best that will make it through to production.

LEGO builder Carl Greatrix submitted the Caterham concept and gained 10,000 votes between May and September last year. Mike McCoy, from the LEGO Ideas team, said: “Carl is known in the LEGO community for his photo-realistic models of cars, trains and aircraft. He’s perfectly captured the classic British sportscar in LEGO bricks and now you’ll be able to own one too.”

Caterham Chief Commercial Officer, David Ridley, said: “The LEGO Company is one of the most iconic toy brands in the world so to have our car recreated in the legendary bricks is an enormous honour. The great thing about LEGO toys is that they are timeless – it certainly isn’t just children who love it; we have a few of our team members who are avid fans despite being well into their 40s. If you know someone who has always wanted a Caterham Seven, you can now tell them you’re getting them one.”

With the product still under development, the exact styling details, retail price and colour scheme of the Caterham Seven LEGO model set is yet to be confirmed. It will be available in toy stores across the UK later this year.

'Barn Find' Jaguar E-Type sells for £58k

A 1963 Jaguar E-Type found under a hedge has sold for £58,000 at COYS auction house.

The E-Type, shoowing just 44,870 miles on the clock, still had the last tax disc on the windscreen which expired in November 1969. The car’s first owner in May 1963 was Ivor Arbiter, who owned Drum City and Sound City in London and was the designer of the ‘drop – T’ logo for The Beatles.

“It is ideal for restoration and is extremely rare,” said valuer James Good at international auctioneers COYS, “It has a great history, including racing, which collectors love.”

The car’s first owner, Arbiter, was at the centre of the 60s music scene. The Beatle’s Manager Brian Epstein requested that the band’s name appeared on the bass drum so Arbiter sketched the “drop-T” logo on a scrap of paper with the capital B and dropped T to emphasise the word ‘beat’. Drum City was paid £5 for the design and it was hand painted by local sign writer, Eddie Stokes, who painted bass-drum heads for the store during his lunch hour.

Good added: “The Beatles logo is now recognised as one of the most significant and widely reproduced logos in history, and the fact that it was designed by the first owner of this E-Type is not insignificant.”

The car changed owners a couple of times between 1965 and 1967, when it moved to its last owner Frank Riches. Frank was a keen motorsport enthusiast and raced both the E-Type and his MGTF at Oulton Park, Brands Hatch and Blackbushe between 1967 and 1969. Frank would drive the E-type to the circuit with the MG behind and would then race both cars and drive home.

Good said: “This wonderful Series 1, 3.8 E-Type is in original condition, with matching numbers and has never been restored. It retains all the features it carried in 1969 and is possibly one of the most original examples remaining today. The car needs a total restoration but it has all the ingredients to make a superb car – this is a true rarity.”

This E-Type comes with its original brown log book, V5 and V5C, its last MOT certificate dated November 1968, the sales invoice to Frank Riches for £855 along with the Heritage Certificate confirming all the important details. It also has its original Operating Maintenance and Service Handbook, Service Manual and Spare Parts Catalogue and the original jack.

Chris Routledge, CEO of international auctioneers COYS, said: “The derelict E-Type attracted attention from all four corners of the world and bidders in a packed auction room and via telephone fought fiercely for it on Tuesday night. It ended up going to an English collector and Beatles enthusiast who plans to slowly restore it to its former glory.”

The most powerful variant of the executive saloon is driven by a 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine with two new turbochargers. The supercharged six-cylinder engine delivers 401 bhp for a 0-62mph time of 4.6 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155mph. A 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission is specially matched to the requirements of the new E 43 4MATIC with paddles on the steering wheel. A double-declutching function in "Sport" and "Sport Plus" transmission modes makes for an a ‘even more emotional driving experience’.

'Defined ignition intervention' additionally enables faster gear shifting than in "Eco" and "Comfort" modes, while "Manual" mode can be selected using a separate button in the centre console. Meanwhile, the retuned sports suspension based on the AIR BODY CONTROL air suspension and the more direct steering ratio also provide a ‘signature’ AMG Driving Performance. The Adaptive Damping System sports suspension features in a model-specific configuration and offers a choice of three modes - "Comfort", "Sport" and "Sport Plus".

The standard-spec AMG Performance 4MATIC four-wheel drive combines ‘optimum traction with high agility’ thanks to rear-biased torque distribution.

AMG styling includes three large openings in the front apron to ensure an optimum flow of air to the coolers while the diamond grille with chromed pins, a louvre in high-gloss black and the AMG lettering represent further hallmarks of the AMG 43 models. The side view is dominated by high-sheen 19-inch AMG five-spoke light-alloy wheels painted in high-gloss black while at the rear, two chrome-plated quad-flow exhaust tailpipes conveying a sporty aesthetic. The rear diffusor comes in silver chrome, while the standard-spec spoiler lip on the boot lid is painted in the body colour.

Inside, a secure position in the sports seats even when driving at speed features improved lateral support. The upholstery in ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA microfibre in black (optionally: nappa leather) features red topstitching. To match the seat design, the door centre panels and the dashboard are finished in ARTICO man-made leather with red topstitching. Exclusive pedals, a black roof lining and red seat belts add further sporty highlights.

The multifunction sports steering wheel in black nappa leather with red contrasting topstitching and featuring a flattened bottom section is matched by the AMG instrument cluster - delivering all relevant information in a clearly arranged layout, optimised for a dynamic driving style. Two tube-style round dials, the multifunction colour display, the RACETIMER and the 280 km/h scale in chequered-flag design conjure up a sports car feel.

The new Mercedes-AMG E 43 4MATIC will debut at the New York Auto Show in March 2016, before hitting showrooms in September 2016.

Abarth reveals 124 spider

Fiat's Performance division, Abarth, has unveiled its new 124 spider.

Developed with input from the Abarth Racing Team, the rear wheel drive roadster features a mechanical Limited-Slip differential as standard to secure drive and traction. Weighing just 1,060 kilograms, most if it concentrated between the axles and the engine for better handling, the 124 has a weight-to-power ratio of 6.2 kg/HP - the best in its category says Abarth.

The suspension has a high double-wishbone layout in front and a five-link set up in the rear, specifically tuned for greater braking and cornering stability. The Abarth dynamic vehicle set-up ensures drivers can get the most out of the car, while the “Abarth by Bilstein” dampers, together with stiffened anti-roll bars, provide ‘ultimate handling and driving comfort’.

Powered by a four-cylinder 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo engine, it delivers 170 HP and 250 Nm of torque for a top speed of 143mph and a 0 to 62mph time of 6.8-seconds. The spider is available with a six-speed manual or the automatic Sequenziale Sportivo gearbox with paddles behind the steering wheel. Shifting is described as extremely fast and the performance of the car is boosted even further by a “Sport” setting mode. Stopping power comes from the Brembo braking system, with aluminium front callipers. To provides a 'proper race car feeling' when driving on track, the new 124 Spider lets the driver disengage the electronic controls to experience the mechanical balance and linear engine response.

Fitted with the Racing Anti-glare kit, a matt black treatment for bonnet and boot lid, the interior Racing Alcantara Kit, a standard-fit ‘Record Monza’ exhaust is also installed to ensure outstanding engine performance and an 'unmistakable sound'.

Styling wise, a horizontal line rises from the front and stretches rearward to join with the rear line near the rear light cluster: this is a reference to the classic Fiat 124 spider. Both the front bumper, with its larger air intake, and the rear bumper’s aerodynamic extractor were both shaped in the wind tunnel, as were the rear spoiler and wind stop which both contribute to improving air flow. The 17-inch alloy wheels, the windscreen surround and the roll bars are finished in “Forgiato (forged) Grey”. The bonnet humps suggest the longitudinal position of the engine, also a direct reference to the original 124 spider. At the rear, ‘swallow-tail’ rear wings and the horizontal rear lights pick up particular features of its classic predecessor.

On the inside, the leather seats are supportive and allow for a sporty driving position as far back and as low as possible. The controls are in tune with the car's sporty set-up with the position of the aluminium pedal board, the small-diameter steering wheel, the short gear lever and the start button on the dashboard and three-point seat belts all contributing to a sporty driving experience. The instrument panel includes a large rev counter with red background arranged in a central position.

Five body colours are available: special solid "Turini 1975 White " and “Costa Brava 1972 Red, metallic  "Isola d’Elba 1974 Blue”, "Portogallo 1974 Grey" and “San Marino 1972 Black” - the nomenclature a tribute to its Abarth’s rallying success.

The Abarth 124 spider will be available from September with UK pricing yet to be confirmed but expected to start around the £30k mark.

Volkswagen reveals Golf GTI TCR

Volkswagen has unveiled its Golf GTI TCR (Touring Car Championship) competition car.

Riding on 18-inch racing rims and with a chassis that is roughly 40 centimetres wider than the production Golf, the huge rear wing also guarantees ‘optimal handling’. An aerodynamic front splitter and carbon rear wing are among the modifications for the racetrack, while features that ensure maximum safety for the driver are a racing seat with head protectors, racing safety cage, and an FIA-approved safety tank.

The new Golf GTI TCR includes a powerful straight four-cylinder engine, a sequential gearbox with shift paddles located on the steering wheel, and a ‘consistently developed racing chassis’. Volkswagen Motorsport developed the car in cooperation with the sport department at SEAT, using experience gained with the SEAT Leon Cup Racer. The 2-litre turbo engine with direct fuel injection is the same one used in the top sporting model, the Golf R. The racing version generates 243 kW (330 PS) and produces 410 Nm of torque.

The racetrack is not the only place the Golf GTI is celebrating its 40th birthday. To mark the anniversary, Volkswagen is launching the most powerful production GTI ever: the Golf GTI Clubsport. VW presented sketches of the new car at the GTI meeting at the Worthersee in May 2015, before unveiling a production model at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The 2-litre TFSI engine generates 265 PS – that is 35 PS more than the previous most powerful Golf GTI. Another feature of the turbocharged direct- injection engine is a boost function, which allows the driver to briefly increase the engine power by ten per cent to 290 PS.

Quotes on the customer sports project with the Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR Jost Capito, Volkswagen Motorsport Director said: “The Golf GTI TCR allows customer sports teams to partake in reasonably-priced motorsport with a Volkswagen. Furthermore, the teams can expand their motorsport commitments innumerous TCR championships, both at national and international level. "

Eduard Weidl, Head of Customer Sports added: “The use of the Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR in customer sports is a great opportunity, the likes of which we have not seen before on the motorsport scene at Volkswagen. When developing the technology, our main focus was on keeping the running costs at races as low as possible.”

20 Golf GTI TCRs will be built, although all have already been snapped up by private racing teams. The 2016 TCR International Series gets underway 1 April in Bahrain.

Volvo adds Polestar performance range

Volvo’s performance division Polestar has launched a range of performance upgrades.

Polestar Performance Parts are available for the Volvo S60, V40, V60 and XC60 models to begin with, including chassis parts, wheels, exhaust, interior and exterior details, and more.

"We have received strong feedback over a long period of time from customers all over the world regarding Polestar Performance Parts. We are delighted to be able to meet the demand, starting from today. This is a product improving on the already strong base of Volvo cars in terms of performance, handling and driving pleasure," said Niels Möller, Chief Operating Officer of Polestar.

"What we learned on the racing circuits with our colleagues at Cyan Racing is that championships are not won in a single lap. The secret of our success on the tracks is in creating balanced and precise cars that are predictable for the driver to control in all situations. Lessons learned on the tracks are transferred directly into the development of our road cars and performance products. The new range of Polestar Performance Parts is no exception – they are designed and developed with the very same philosophy," said Henrik Fries, R&D Director of Polestar.

Available as a complete package, including chassis parts, wheels and tyres, intake and exhaust, as well as exterior and interior parts, all of these components will together ‘create a more compelling driving experience’, especially in combination with the Polestar Performance Optimisation, and can be bought in separate packages as well.

Italdesign unveils GTZero concept

Italdesign has revealed a modern interpretation of the classic GT car with its GTZero.

The GTZero, presented in Geneva, is powered by three electric motors, two on the front axle and one on the rear - which is able to deliver an overall power output of 360 kW with four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering. Built on a modular monocoque carbon frame with integrated batteries, its top speed is limited to 155mph and it has a driving range of around 310 miles. 80 per cent of the charge is achievable in about 30 minutes.

The Gran Turismo’s sleek and dynamic profile is combined with a 'wide and comfortable' passenger compartment. The reduced rear overhang, elongated front and contained height convey its sporty nature, whilst the shooting-brake layout allows three bags to be packed comfortably in the rear luggage compartment and two more in the front one.

The GTZero was planned, designed and built at Italdesign’s headquarters in Moncalieri. The GTZero pays tribute to the nearly fifty years of history of Italdesign, recapturing several ideas from some of its historic concept cars. The active flaps on the bonnet are reminiscent of the 1997 Alfa Romeo Scighera, whilst the long bonnet, pronounced mudguards and pitched tail are a tribute to the 1995 Daewoo Bucrane; the sporty setup of the car ‘for family use’, on the other hand, brings to mind the Ferrari GG50.

The exterior lines flow from the wheels, which are 22” at the front and 23” at the rear, to the treatment of the body surfaces is both muscular, with the large wheel arches and bonnet elongated to create its sporty character, and wraparound, to ‘soften its aggressive feel’. The large air intakes and spoilers — solutions that are not merely aesthetic but functional as well — dominate the front and rear views and enclose active aerodynamic systems. At high speeds the spoilers come out to increase downforce and the air intakes open to increase aerodynamic flows. On the side, two slots close to the wheel arches stand out and help with brake system cooling.

The rear features a hexagonal shape large rear window, which also acts as an access door to the luggage compartment. The geometrical shape is framed by a long LED which runs right around the glazed surface and indicates the typical functions of the rear optical units.

Car entry is through two doors which open in the elytra style, described as like ‘the shell-like protections on beetle wings’ and which take a portion of the roof, increasing comfort when getting in and out of the passenger compartment.

In this all-electric version the batteries are integrated into the frame and inside the central tunnel, whilst the three electric motors are distributed between the front and rear axles (two on the front, one on the rear); in the hybrid version the drive shaft will be located inside the tunnel.

The dashboard includes three large air conditioning vents; the design is functional yet makes full use of ventilation technology used recently in a number of high-end domestic fans, but ‘never before tested on a car’. The vents have no internal structure at all and the air flow is generated by the vent’s ergonomics.

The steering wheel is the GTZero is described as the real control console - with two rear pads, located where the paddle shifters are normally positioned, which allow the three-level OLED dashboard display to be controlled. Another two, on the front of the steering wheel, are used to control primary functions, such as lights, direction indicators, windscreen wipers.

The small central monitor, closer to the steering wheel, indicates the gear used; just behind it and to the side, two screens show speed and motor revs and, finally, the large monitor displays navigation information. The information displayed can be changed by touching the steering wheel pads, touching both the surfaces at the same time activates the “Pista!” mode, which modifies the power delivered and the trim of the car. In “Pista!” mode, all the information is concentrated on one display.

New Porsche 911 R inspired by 1967 racer

Porsche has presented its new 911 R pure-bred sports car in Geneva.

The new limited edition 911 R is inspired by its historic namesake, a road-homologated racing car from 1967. Produced as part of a limited production series, the original 911 R was campaigned in road races of the period, such as the Tour de France and Targa Florio, and also in world record runs.

Limited to just 991 examples worldwide, the 2016 model is powered by a 500 hp (368 kW) four-litre naturally-aspirated flat-six engine driving the rear wheels, mated exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission.

Like its predecessor, the new 911 R features a systematic lightweight construction and a ‘devotion to maximum performance’ - the special model has an overall weight of 1,370 kilograms making it the lightest version of the 911. The bonnet and front wheel-arches are made of carbon fibre and the roof is magnesium, which reduces the centre of gravity. Rear windscreen and rear side windows are lightweight plastic while additional weight-saving factors include reduced sound insulation in the interior and the omission of a rear bench seat. The optional air conditioning system and the audio system also hint at the 911’s slimming regime.

All the lightweight components of the body and the complete chassis originate from the 911 GT3. However, with a view to road use, the body does not have the fixed rear wing familiar with that model. Instead, a retractable rear spoiler shared with the Carrera models and a bespoke aerodynamic diffuser beneath the rear underbody provides the necessary downforce. The front and rear apron were also borrowed from the 911 GT3, with a re-designed spoiler lip installed on the front. The sports exhaust system consists of the lightweight construction material titanium.

From a standing start, 0-60 mph is possible in 3.7 seconds on to a top speed of 201 mph. Fuel consumption is 21.2 mpg on the combined cycle. Stopping power comes from Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB), also fitted as standard. Ultra High Performance Tyres of 245 mm width at the front and 305 mm width at the rear provide ‘assured contact’ with the road which are mounted on lightweight, forged aluminium wheels with centre-locking and matt-finish. For everyday versatility, a lift system can also be ordered, raising ground clearance of the front axle by approximately 30mm at the touch of a button.

Continuous coloured stripes in red or green over the entire mid-section of the vehicle provide a visual cue to the its 1967 predecessor. A further leitmotif is provided by the ‘Porsche’ script along each side of the vehicle. The driver and front passenger sit in a carbon-fibre bucket seat, trimmed with bespoke fabric centre panels in Pepita tartan design, a nod to the first 911 in the 1960s. Fabric pull straps on each door are a familiar hint to the focused intent of all 911 models from the GT department.

Ahead of the driver sits an R-specific 360 mm diameter GT sport steering wheel, and a short shift gearlever. Underlining the special nature of this limited production model, carbon trim strips in the interior with an embedded aluminium badge on the passenger's side indicate the limited number of each 911 R.

The new Porsche 911 R is available to order now, priced from £136,901 OTR with first UK deliveries are scheduled for June.

Spyker C8 Preliator revealed

Spyker has unveils its third-generation sports car - the C8 Preliator.

The C8 Preliator’s design incorporates Spyker’s aviation heritage, reflected among others, in the Head-Up Display similar to that a pilot may see which is fitted as standard to every car.

The Preliator name, which means ‘fighter’ or ‘warrior’ in latin, pays tribute to that aviation heritage. Fighters are warplanes as made by Spyker between 1914 and 1918. The interior features plenty of aviation style switches and dials, while the 3D LED rear lights are styled on the nozzle of a modern jet engine. The sports car runs on 12-spoke ‘Rotorblade’ alloy wheels - also inspired by the turbine blades of a jet engine.

By mounting a supercharger to the Audi V8 engine performance has improved ‘significantly’ compared to its predecessor with the rear-mid mounted V8 producing 525bhp, mated to a 6-speed manual or automatic.

The successor to the C8 Aileron, launched at Geneva in 2009, is ‘made for discerning owners who appreciate the attention to detail and bespoke features’ says Spyker such as the latin axiom which has adorned the Spyker propellor logo since 1914 “Nulla tenacia invia est via” (for the tenacious no road is impassable) now etched on the exhaust tail pipe.

Exclusivity is also assured as the Dutch company has confirmed it will only produce 50 units.
