All-new Subaru Impreza revealed in New York

Subaru debuted its all new Impreza at the New York International Auto Show.

As before, every model is equipped as standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD), for maximised driving agility, stability and traction on all surfaces, says Subaru.

Power comes from four-cylinder horizontally-opposed ‘Boxer’ engines, while a new Subaru Global Platform is set to form the basis of all future Subaru models. The 'highly-adaptable' platform is suitable for a range of different body styles and powertrains, including Subaru’s all-terrain crossover and SUV models.

A new design language sees the brand’s signature hexagonal grille and ‘hawk-eye’ headlights fitted to a more ‘sculptural body’, with the new car’s its athletic stance accentuated by prominent wheel arches and flowing lines. Overall length is up 41 mm and width has been increases by 38 mm. The larger dimensions create a roomier cabin, while a 10 mm lower height aids aerodynamics with a lower coefficient of drag.

The Impreza’s new platform incorporates several types of high-strength steel to ‘significantly’ enhance straight-line stability, agility and ride comfort, while suppressing noise, vibration and harshness. Subaru claims the new platform increases rigidity of the unitised body structure by over 70 percent compared to the current Impreza model. The double-wishbone independent rear suspension mounts its rear stabiliser bar directly to the body, reducing body roll by 50 percent.

The new model provides higher levels of safety than the outgoing car, by accommodating the EyeSight collision avoidance technology for the first time, as well as crash energy absorption figures improved by 40 percent over the old Impreza. The EyeSight system acts as a ‘second pair of eyes’ for drivers by employing stereo colour camera technology to monitor the road and traffic ahead of potential hazards. This includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Pre-Collision Braking and Lane Departure and Sway Warning, plus a Lane Keep Assist function. Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are also available.

Also new are Steering Responsive Headlights, which can illuminate curves as the vehicle steers into them, and High Beam Assist, which automatically activates and deactivates the high-beam headlamps based on driving conditions. All models include as standard equipment front seat side impact airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver’s knee airbag. New driver-assist technologies, include Reverse Automatic Braking and the display of steering lines for the standard rear-vision camera. Reverse Automatic Braking can apply the vehicle’s brakes if an obstacle is detected while reversing.

High connectivity comes via the Subaru STARLINK touchscreen infotainment. Controlled by a large touchscreen and using Subaru’s latest-generation voice control system, the display screen also provides the display for the standard rear vision camera and navigation.

Subaru says the new Impreza 5-door hatchback is currently under consideration for the European market.

Nissan reveals revamped GT-R in New York

The facelifted Nissan GT-R is making its debut at the New York International Auto Show.

A range of design tweaks, performance enhancements and new features are said to represent the most significant changes to the model since it was introduced in 2007.

The latest GT-R’s front end makeover includes the new chrome matte finish “V-motion” grille – enlarged for improved engine cooling – with an updated mesh pattern, while the new bonnet has been reinforced to help improve stability during high-speed driving. A redesigned front spoiler lip and bumper with finishers situated immediately below the headlights are said to generate high levels of downforce.

The rear of the car has also been revamped with new bodywork to help improve air flow, as well as side air vents next to the quad exit exhaust pipes. The belt line that separates the lower black section from the body panel has been heightened to give the car a wider and more aggressive look from the rear.

The 3.8-litre 24-valve twin-turbocharged V6 engine now delivers 570 PS at 6,800 rpm and 637Nm of torque. The improved output, which is the result of individual ignition-timing control of the cylinders and extra boost from the turbochargers gives acceleration in the mid- to high-ranges (3,200 rpm and above). It comes mated to a thoroughly refined 6-speed dual-clutch transmission that features smoother shifts and less noise. That familiar GT-R tone also has been upgraded with an engine that has ‘never sounded better’ says Nissan. The resonance of the new titanium exhaust and Active Sound Enhancement (ASE) enhance the driving experience.

On the inside, the entire dashboard and instrument panel are new and covered with high-quality leather. The centre dashboard layout has also been improved and simplified - Integrated navigation and audio controls reduce the number of switches from 27 in the previous model to only 11 in the 2016 model. An enlarged 8-inch touchscreen monitor features large icons on the display screen to make it easy to operate. A new display command control on the carbon-fibre centre console allows easy operation.

The paddle shifts are now mounted to the new steering wheel, allowing drivers to change gears in mid-turn without having to take their hands off the wheel. The paddles themselves, along with the ventilation controls, have improved feel and better sound when engaged or adjusted.

Cornering abilities have become even better with a more rigid body structure and new suspension, resulting in better stability through quick lateral transitions and higher overall cornering speed. Providing the grip are sticky 20 inch tyres, wrapped around new “Y-spoke” machine-finished forged aluminium wheels.

The Recaro Edition will continue to be available but there are also new colours for 2016, inside and out, designed to complement the GT-R’s character. A “Katsura Orange” with multi layered painting has been added to the exterior paint palate, while the leather interior of the Prestige Edition offers customers four different options: the newly added Tan, as well as Red, Ivory and all over Black.

The revamped Nissan GT-R is set to go on sale in the Autumn.

New Toyota Prius PHEV debuts in NY

The second generation of the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid has debuted at the 2016 New York International Auto Show.

Offering improvements in its EV performance, in terms of driving range, power and maximum speed, the new model builds on the strengths of the latest generation Prius, introduced earlier this year.

The new Prius Plug-in’s Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain features a larger, 8.8kW/h lithium-ion battery pack, increasing its driving range in EV mode as well as the potential driving range from a tank of fuel. Fuel consumption shows a marked improvement compared to its predecessor, with an estimated average figure of 202mpg, the best rating for any current plug-in hybrid on the market, says Toyota, producing a CO2 figure of just 32g/km.

Even when not running in EV mode, the Prius Plug-in will automatically favour its all-electric drive capability in situations where this can deliver higher efficiency than the petrol engine, most notably when driving around town and on shorter journeys.

The new plug-in hybrid system further minimises use of the petrol engine, even when accelerating quickly or using the cabin heater, with the adoption of a new battery-powered heating system that improves efficiency in cold weather, and the world’s first heat pump air conditioning system with gas injection.

As a result of these advanced technologies, the new car can be driven at speeds up to 84mph while still in EV mode. The potential EV driving range is more than 30 miles, around twice that of its predecessor, and charging the battery should take around two hours and 20 minutes.

The hybrid system’s 1.8-litre Atkinson cycle VVT-i engine also plays an important role in its overall efficiency. Its large-volume exhaust gas recirculation system, improved combustion efficiency and innovative measures to manage heat and reduce friction have improved its thermal efficiency to 40 per cent, a world-best figure for a mass-produced petrol engine.

The Prius styling presents a ‘chiselled profile and edgy character lines’ according to Toyota, and has a more ‘road-hugging’ look and a lower centre of gravity. Compared to the current model, it is 165mm longer, 15mm wider and sits 20mm lower to ground.

The car’s 0.24 drag coefficient (Cd) is expected to be among the lowest of any production saloon, achieved with a number of advanced design features such as the “double bubble” tailgate glass and a grille shutter which automatically closes when airflow is not needed to cool the radiator.

Weight has been kept to a minimum through extensive use of high-tensile steel in the bodyshell, aluminium for the bonnet and, in a first for a mass-produced car, a carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) tailgate. Its status as an individual model within the Prius range is confirmed by a unique lighting signature, created with four-lamp LED projector headlights and LED tail lamps.

The interior features a four-seat layout, built around a full-length centre console. The instrument cluster has dual 4.2-inch full colour TFT screens while the centre cluster has a floating design and an eight-inch touchscreen for easy operation of audio and navigation functions, including flick actions to scroll through the different displays.

A sound-insulating laminated windscreen and front door glazing creates, says Toyota, an ‘exceptionally quiet’ cabin environment, aided and abetted by a quieter S-Flow automatic air conditioning system which has been made smaller and lighter and uses less power.

The Prius Plug-in will be offered with Toyota Safety Sense, equipping it with integrated active safety and driver assistance functions including a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection and Autonomous Emergency Braking; Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist; Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control with full stop technology; and Automatic High Beam headlight operation. A Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert will also be available.

The new Prius Plug-in will be available in UK showrooms from the end of this year.

Mercedes unveils GLC Coupe

Mercedes has revealed its new GLC Coupe SUV.

A year after making its debut in concept form in Shanghai, the production version appears largely unchanged, fusing the stylistic elements of a sporting coupe with Mercedes’ modern SUV design language.

“The GLC Coupé reflects our iconic Mercedes-Benz coupé design while symbolising the bipolarity of our brand – it is ‘hot and cool’,” said Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG. “With its design idiom of sensual purity, it perfectly embodies our styling philosophy while at the same time representing contemporary luxury.”

Standard sports suspension is combined with sports steering, permanent all-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic transmission for a blend of ‘superior’ ride comfort and ‘decidedly sporty’ agility, says Mercedes.

Two suspension variants with continuously adjustable damping are optionally available: the new DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL with steel springing as well as the already familiar AIR BODY CONTROL multi-chamber air suspension – both promising further enhanced driving dynamics and comfort.

Measuring 4.73 metres in length, 1.60 metres in height and with a wheelbase of 2.87 metres, the GLC Coupe is almost eight centimetres longer and some four centimetres lower than the ‘regular’ GLC, with which it shares its basic architecture.

The GLC Coupe is distinguished by a single-louvred diamond radiator grille and a restyled, sloping roofline. The A-pillar is less steeply raked, while the continuation of the roof outline is lower, flowing to a muscular rear end. The rear window dispenses with a wiper, as the airflow does not break away until after the spoiler lip, which, according to Mercedes, means that water is unable to strike the rear window.

The new GLC Coupe is available in a total of eight model variants, with four diesel and four petrol engines, including a plug-in hybrid as well as a powerful Mercedes-AMG model.

The entry-level models are the four-cylinder diesel-engined 220 d and 250 d 4MATIC Coupe with outputs ranging from 170hp to 204hp as well as the four-cylinder petrol-engined 250 4MATIC Coupe rated at 211hp.

Mercedes also offers a plug-in hybrid (350 e 4MATIC Coupe) that combines agile all-wheel drive with low fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. With a total system output of 320hp, it delivers a top speed of 146mph with acceleration from rest to 62mph in 5.9 seconds, courtesy of a boost function.

CO2 emissions are between 59‑64g/km in normal use but it can cover as much as 18.6 miles in zero-emission all-electric mode.

The range-topping Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4MATIC Coupe, powered by a 367hp V6 biturbo engine, can cover the 0 to 62mph sprint in less than 5 seconds.

Market launch will be in the autumn with these engine line-ups. Further models will follow at the end of 2016.

Mazda reveals MX-5 RF with retractable hardtop

Mazda has unveiled the MX-5 RF (“retractable fastback”) on the eve of the New York International Auto Show.

Featuring fastback styling with a smooth roofline that slopes down to the rear, the MX-5 RF’s unique rear roof and retractable back window deliver a ‘distinctive new convertible feeling’, says Mazda.

The power roof opens and closes with the press of a button while moving at speeds of up to 10km/h, stowing away compactly so the boot space is exactly the same as the soft-top model's.

Also like the soft-top, the new version will be available in Europe with a choice of two SKYACTIV-G petrol engines – the 1.5 and 2.0 – mated either to a six-speed manual gearbox or – exclusively for the MX-5 RF – a six-speed automatic.

Paint colours include a new premium ‘Machine Grey’ finish, specially designed to intensify the contrast between light and shadow in order to accentuate Mazda’s sculptural ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’ exteriors.

The new colour, which will be available on a range of Mazda models, is applied using Mazda’s Takuminuri painting technology system – a three-coat structure consisting of colour, reflective and clear coats. The reflective layer, which contains extremely thin, high-brightness aluminium flakes, shrinks during the drying process to about one-quarter the thickness of most reflective layers. This causes the flakes to lie flat with regular spacing between each flake for a high-density finish that gives the entire surface a sheen when illuminated, and a genuine metallic look. Meanwhile, Jet black pigment is used in both the reflective and colour layers. It is visible through the spaces between the aluminium flakes, giving them a black hue and thus heightening the contrast.

The MX-5 RF is on display at the New York International Auto Show, which opens to the public from 25 March to 3 April.

Volvo to celebrate the Estate car at Techno Classica 2016

Volvo has confirmed it will attend the world's biggest classic car show, Techno Classica, celebrating “60 years of estate heritage”.

The new Volvo V90, which just debuted at the Geneva Motor Show, comes after six decades of estate knowledge, starting with the Volvo Duett which was launched in 1953. Volvo describes it as the first car to meet the combined needs of drivers’ active leisure time and practical professional lives and has sold more than 6 million estates worldwide, representing around a third of the total number of Volvos sold since the company’s foundation in 1927.

The Volvo stand at Techno Classica is entirely devoted to the Swedish brand´s estate history, featuring a selection of six iconic estate models that have shaped Volvo’s history: The Duett - Launched in 1953, the Duett went on to become one of the first Volvos to be exported to the US and it was immortalised in 1997 when featured on a Swedish postage stamp.

The Duett was followed in 1962 by the Amazon, or the 221 as it was officially known. The Amazon was a more elegant and refined estate than the Duett, which had its origins as a delivery van, while it also offered more space in the boot. At the end of November 1967, Volvo presented the third variant in what was now developing into a complete car family known as the 140 Series: the Volvo 145. This design of the rear section has since become a well-known characteristic of all Volvo estates. The Volvo 145 quickly became an extremely popular estate and played an increasingly important role within the 140 Series.

A refresh of the 1800 sports coupe, the 1800 ES was known in England as a Shooting Brake: a sporty estate with space for hunting gear or golf clubs in the back. The 1800 ES was introduced in the autumn of 1971, and its most exciting feature possibly being the huge rear windscreen that had no bezel whatsoever. Hinges and handles were fixed directly to the glass, which was very modern in the early 1970s. As only around 8,000 1800 ES were built, it has become one of the most sought-after classic Volvo models.

In 1974, the archetypal Volvo estate car was launched: the 245, which remained in production for almost 20 years until 1993, and was also available in a more exclusive edition - the 265 with a V6 engine. The 1980s marked the launch of the 245 Turbo edition, the world’s first estate car with a turbo engine. With its intense yellow paint job, 240 horsepower and acceleration of 0-62mph in 6.9 seconds. Launched as a limited edition, model year 1994-only version of the 850, the T5-R became an ‘instant collector's item’ says Volvo.

Techno Classica takes place in Essen, Germany and runs from 6-10 April.

McLaren adds track-dedicated 570S GT4 and 570S Sprint

McLaren has announced two new track-dedicated models will join the Sports Series range - the 570S GT4 and the 570S Sprint.

Developed in conjunction with McLaren GT motorsport division, the 570S GT4 will now enter a season-long development programme in the British GT championship with customer team, Black Bull Ecurie Ecosse.

Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive Officer, McLaren Automotive explained: ‘As with road-going models wearing a McLaren badge, the 570S GT4 and 570S Sprint models are about being an engaging and exciting drive. The launch of the Sports Series has broadened McLaren to a new audience, introducing technologies to the sports car market and to a new group of customers. The 570S GT4 is doing the same in the motorsport world, and will bring the opportunity to own and race a McLaren – previously limited to a very small number of people – to a much wider group.’

The track-only 570S GT4 shares the carbon fibre MonoCell II chassis architecture with the other models in the Sports Series. The bodywork is formed over wider track both front and rear to accommodate centre-locking cast magnesium alloy wheels shod with slick Pirelli racing tyres. Two-way adjustable motorsport dampers with coil-over springs are fitted front and rear, and an on-board air jacking system is fitted as standard.

With a 'pure focus on laptimes', the 570S GT4 features a unique aerodynamic package which includes a GT4-specification high level rear wing, mounted on aluminium pylons, a larger front splitter and reprofiled floor assembly. An additional front centre high temperature radiator sits below a GT3-inspired bonnet with radiator exit ducts. These upgrades have been designed to optimise the aerodynamic performance and cooling of the 570S GT4 to ensure it is able to perform in the ‘harshest race conditions’.

The McLaren designed and developed 3.8-litre twin turbo V8 M838TE engine is carried over from the road-going Sports Series model. The seven-speed shift gearbox is also familiar to the other models in the range, transferring power to the track via the rear wheels.

Black Bull Ecurie Ecosse will run one example of the 570S GT4 alongside the confirmed entry of the 650S GT3 with Factory Driver Rob Bell alongside Alaisdair McCaig. Driver details for the season will be announced shortly.

The 570S GT4 will make its public development debut at the opening round of the British GT Championship at Brands Hatch, UK over the weekend 16-17 April. It will be eligible for all GT4 homologated championships globally from the 2017 season, and is priced from £159,900 (ex works).

Further details for the 570S Sprint, including pricing, will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Volvo S90 and V90 pricing confirmed

Volvo has confirmed pricing for its S90 and V90.

Available to order now, on-the-road prices start at £32,555 for the S90 saloon and £34,555 for the V90 estate.

Like the XC90 before them, both feature the new face of Volvo including the T-shaped LED headlights, as well as being the latest models to be built on Volvo’s all-new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform.

Both models will initially be available with a choice of two 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engines - the D4 and the D5 PowerPulse – and in two trim levels, Momentum and Inscription. The front-wheel-drive 190 hp D4 comes with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and offers combined fuel consumption of 64.2 mpg and CO2 emissions of 116 g/km in the S90. In the V90, these figures are 62.8 mpg and 119 g/km.

The 235 hp D5 utilises Volvo’s PowerPulse to boost responsiveness. This uses compressed air, which is stored in a tank in the engine bay and refilled automatically to spool up the turbo at low revs, helping overcome turbo lag. To 'harness the engine’s power', the D5 PowerPulse comes with all-wheel drive while an eight-speed automatic gearbox is also standard.

Every version of the S90 and V90 is ‘luxuriously equipped’ says Volvo. As standard, entry-level Momentum cars come with leather upholstery, LED headlights with active high beam, two-zone climate control with ‘CleanZone’ air-filtration system, keyless engine starting and heated front seats.

Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system is also standard. This brings a 9” touch screen, satellite navigation (including lifetime annual map updates), voice-control and access to the internet and a range of cloud-based apps. The S90 gets a powered bootlid while the V90 benefits from a powered tailgate.

Pilot Assist, Volvo’s semi-autonomous drive feature, is standard on every S90 and V90. It automatically keeps you at a set speed or distance from the vehicle in front, braking and accelerating with the flow of traffic, and gives gentle steering inputs to keep the car within lane markings at motorway speeds up to 80 mph. Unlike previous versions of the system, it no longer needs to follow another car.

The latest version of City Safety is also fitted to every S90 and V90. This includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, and the world-first application of large-animal detection.

Moving up to the Inscription model adds Nappa soft leather upholstery, powered front seats, a 12.3” active TFT driver’s information display (Momentum cars get an 8” version), 18” diamond-cut/silver alloy wheels, keyless entry and handsfree boot/tailgate opening and closing. Additional premium touches include walnut interior inlays, rear footwell and side step illumination, and chrome exterior details.

The optional Xenium package is available across the range and adds a powered tilt and slide glass sunroof (panoramic in the V90), a parking camera system with 360 degree surround view, and Park Assist Pilot, which includes automatic parallel and 90 degree parking.

Both models are available to order now, with the first S90 customer deliveries expected in September and the first V90s in October.

Abarth reveals 124 spider

Fiat's Performance division, Abarth, has unveiled its new 124 spider.

Developed with input from the Abarth Racing Team, the rear wheel drive roadster features a mechanical Limited-Slip differential as standard to secure drive and traction. Weighing just 1,060 kilograms, most if it concentrated between the axles and the engine for better handling, the 124 has a weight-to-power ratio of 6.2 kg/HP - the best in its category says Abarth.

The suspension has a high double-wishbone layout in front and a five-link set up in the rear, specifically tuned for greater braking and cornering stability. The Abarth dynamic vehicle set-up ensures drivers can get the most out of the car, while the “Abarth by Bilstein” dampers, together with stiffened anti-roll bars, provide ‘ultimate handling and driving comfort’.

Powered by a four-cylinder 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo engine, it delivers 170 HP and 250 Nm of torque for a top speed of 143mph and a 0 to 62mph time of 6.8-seconds. The spider is available with a six-speed manual or the automatic Sequenziale Sportivo gearbox with paddles behind the steering wheel. Shifting is described as extremely fast and the performance of the car is boosted even further by a “Sport” setting mode. Stopping power comes from the Brembo braking system, with aluminium front callipers. To provides a 'proper race car feeling' when driving on track, the new 124 Spider lets the driver disengage the electronic controls to experience the mechanical balance and linear engine response.

Fitted with the Racing Anti-glare kit, a matt black treatment for bonnet and boot lid, the interior Racing Alcantara Kit, a standard-fit ‘Record Monza’ exhaust is also installed to ensure outstanding engine performance and an 'unmistakable sound'.

Styling wise, a horizontal line rises from the front and stretches rearward to join with the rear line near the rear light cluster: this is a reference to the classic Fiat 124 spider. Both the front bumper, with its larger air intake, and the rear bumper’s aerodynamic extractor were both shaped in the wind tunnel, as were the rear spoiler and wind stop which both contribute to improving air flow. The 17-inch alloy wheels, the windscreen surround and the roll bars are finished in “Forgiato (forged) Grey”. The bonnet humps suggest the longitudinal position of the engine, also a direct reference to the original 124 spider. At the rear, ‘swallow-tail’ rear wings and the horizontal rear lights pick up particular features of its classic predecessor.

On the inside, the leather seats are supportive and allow for a sporty driving position as far back and as low as possible. The controls are in tune with the car's sporty set-up with the position of the aluminium pedal board, the small-diameter steering wheel, the short gear lever and the start button on the dashboard and three-point seat belts all contributing to a sporty driving experience. The instrument panel includes a large rev counter with red background arranged in a central position.

Five body colours are available: special solid "Turini 1975 White " and “Costa Brava 1972 Red, metallic  "Isola d’Elba 1974 Blue”, "Portogallo 1974 Grey" and “San Marino 1972 Black” - the nomenclature a tribute to its Abarth’s rallying success.

New Porsche 911 R inspired by 1967 racer

Porsche has presented its new 911 R pure-bred sports car in Geneva.

The new limited edition 911 R is inspired by its historic namesake, a road-homologated racing car from 1967. Produced as part of a limited production series, the original 911 R was campaigned in road races of the period, such as the Tour de France and Targa Florio, and also in world record runs.

Limited to just 991 examples worldwide, the 2016 model is powered by a 500 hp (368 kW) four-litre naturally-aspirated flat-six engine driving the rear wheels, mated exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission.

Like its predecessor, the new 911 R features a systematic lightweight construction and a ‘devotion to maximum performance’ - the special model has an overall weight of 1,370 kilograms making it the lightest version of the 911. The bonnet and front wheel-arches are made of carbon fibre and the roof is magnesium, which reduces the centre of gravity. Rear windscreen and rear side windows are lightweight plastic while additional weight-saving factors include reduced sound insulation in the interior and the omission of a rear bench seat. The optional air conditioning system and the audio system also hint at the 911’s slimming regime.

All the lightweight components of the body and the complete chassis originate from the 911 GT3. However, with a view to road use, the body does not have the fixed rear wing familiar with that model. Instead, a retractable rear spoiler shared with the Carrera models and a bespoke aerodynamic diffuser beneath the rear underbody provides the necessary downforce. The front and rear apron were also borrowed from the 911 GT3, with a re-designed spoiler lip installed on the front. The sports exhaust system consists of the lightweight construction material titanium.

From a standing start, 0-60 mph is possible in 3.7 seconds on to a top speed of 201 mph. Fuel consumption is 21.2 mpg on the combined cycle. Stopping power comes from Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB), also fitted as standard. Ultra High Performance Tyres of 245 mm width at the front and 305 mm width at the rear provide ‘assured contact’ with the road which are mounted on lightweight, forged aluminium wheels with centre-locking and matt-finish. For everyday versatility, a lift system can also be ordered, raising ground clearance of the front axle by approximately 30mm at the touch of a button.

Continuous coloured stripes in red or green over the entire mid-section of the vehicle provide a visual cue to the its 1967 predecessor. A further leitmotif is provided by the ‘Porsche’ script along each side of the vehicle. The driver and front passenger sit in a carbon-fibre bucket seat, trimmed with bespoke fabric centre panels in Pepita tartan design, a nod to the first 911 in the 1960s. Fabric pull straps on each door are a familiar hint to the focused intent of all 911 models from the GT department.

Ahead of the driver sits an R-specific 360 mm diameter GT sport steering wheel, and a short shift gearlever. Underlining the special nature of this limited production model, carbon trim strips in the interior with an embedded aluminium badge on the passenger's side indicate the limited number of each 911 R.

The new Porsche 911 R is available to order now, priced from £136,901 OTR with first UK deliveries are scheduled for June.

Spyker C8 Preliator revealed

Spyker has unveils its third-generation sports car - the C8 Preliator.

The C8 Preliator’s design incorporates Spyker’s aviation heritage, reflected among others, in the Head-Up Display similar to that a pilot may see which is fitted as standard to every car.

The Preliator name, which means ‘fighter’ or ‘warrior’ in latin, pays tribute to that aviation heritage. Fighters are warplanes as made by Spyker between 1914 and 1918. The interior features plenty of aviation style switches and dials, while the 3D LED rear lights are styled on the nozzle of a modern jet engine. The sports car runs on 12-spoke ‘Rotorblade’ alloy wheels - also inspired by the turbine blades of a jet engine.

By mounting a supercharger to the Audi V8 engine performance has improved ‘significantly’ compared to its predecessor with the rear-mid mounted V8 producing 525bhp, mated to a 6-speed manual or automatic.

The successor to the C8 Aileron, launched at Geneva in 2009, is ‘made for discerning owners who appreciate the attention to detail and bespoke features’ says Spyker such as the latin axiom which has adorned the Spyker propellor logo since 1914 “Nulla tenacia invia est via” (for the tenacious no road is impassable) now etched on the exhaust tail pipe.

Exclusivity is also assured as the Dutch company has confirmed it will only produce 50 units.

Toyota reveals C-HR crossover

Toyota’s new C-HR made its world debut at the 2016 Geneva motor show.

Giving the Japanese manufacturer a new presence in the crossover market, the C-HR is designed to stand out both within the Toyota line-up and in its segment. Toyota says the new C-HR represents President and CEO Akio Toyoda’s determination to allow greater stylistic freedom for eye-catching design.

As a mid-sized crossover the new model features a slim and sleek coupe-like cabin profile combined with a low body yet raised ground clearance similar to an SUV. At the front a slender upper grille flows into the aggressive wing extremities of the headlamp clusters and wraps fully around the front corners of the vehicle. The blacked out rocker panel towards the front and rear wheel, along with the shoulder axis that runs through to the front and rear emphasise the fast-looking “lift-up” feel of the thin body. The C-HR’s coupe-like styling is further enhanced by disguised rear door handles integrated within the C pillar, sweeping roofline into a large skeletal frame rear spoiler.

The new model is powered by a hybrid powertrain using a 1.8-litre hybrid system, which returns ‘a level of efficiency previously unseen in the crossover segment’ according to Toyota. With CO2 emissions of less than 90 g/km the hybrid powertrain is more efficient and lighter while offering 122 HP.

Alternatively, the Toyota C-HR is also available with the new 115 HP/85 kW 1.2 litre turbo engine. This will have a choice of 6-speed manual gearbox or a Continuously Variable automatic Transmission system, which is developed to meet expectations in response and direct feel for European customers familiar with manual and automatic gearboxes. The CVT is available in front-wheel or 4-wheel drive versions.

Toyota has yet to confirm the release date or pricing.

Bugatti gives Chiron world premiere

Bugatti has revealed its new Chiron supercar.

Described as ‘the world’s most powerful, fastest, most luxurious and most exclusive production super sports car’ the Chiron is the world’s first production sports car with 1,500 HP.

With torque of 1,600 Nm between 2,000 and 6,000 rpm, the Chiron offers a limited maximum speed of a whopping 260mph, and 0 to 62mph time of less than 2.5 seconds. This is the result of the unique eight-litre W16 engine that has been newly developed by Bugatti in combination with the four new, larger turbochargers that are controlled by the Bugatti two-stage turbocharging. A new carbon fibre monocoque, a newly designed adaptive chassis, tyres developed especially for Bugatti and other innovative technologies, help the Chiron ‘for the first time’ become an agile, modern Bugatti with handling that ‘ensures maximum driving pleasure’.

Limited to a series of 500 units the basic price is €2.4 million net (£1.8 million) with Bugatti confirming advance orders have already been received for one third of the total production.

“It is part of human nature to cross boundaries and set new records – to run 100 m faster than ever before, to fly even further into space and to enter new realms. This striving is also our driving force at Bugatti,” said Wolfgang Durheimer, President of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S., at the presentation of the Chiron. “The Chiron is the result of our efforts to make the best even better.”

The first Chiron is due to be delivered to a customer this autumn.

Lamborghini Centenario debuts at Geneva

Lamborghini has presented a special edition Centenario model at the Geneva Motor Show.

The limited edition comes in the year Lamborghini celebrates the centenary of founder Ferruccio Lamborghini's birth. Only 20 coupe and 20 roadster versions of the Centenario will be produced - and all 40 cars are already sold, with a start price of 1.75 million euros plus tax.

The Centenario continues Lamborghini's one-off strategy and is powered by a V12 naturally aspirated engine, producing 770 hp for a 0-62 time of 2.8 seconds with a top speed of more than 217mph. Braking from 62mph to standstill is achieved in 30 meters. A monocoque and body in full carbon fibre provide a low weight of 1,520 kg and a weight to power ratio of just 1.97 kg/hp.

The car's aerodynamic design includes an extending rear wing providing more downforce at high speeds. The introduction of rear-wheel steering provides increased agility and stability, and a new touchscreen provides connected infotainment, including internet browsing and Apple CarPlay.

"The Centenario is a car that perfectly combines tradition and innovation. It looks to the future while honouring the legend that is Ferruccio Lamborghini," says Automobili Lamborghini President and CEO Stephan Winkelmann. "The Centenario is an opportunity for our designers and engineers to transcend some of the constraints of series car production to achieve an incomparable result: the Centenario has immediately proved itself as a desirable collectors' car, while demonstrating new Lamborghini technologies and outstanding performance. It is the most fitting tribute to Ferruccio Lamborghini in his centenary year: a man who created an exceptional brand, believed that anything was possible, and produced extraordinary, iconic cars. The Centenario is a super sports car for Ferruccio Lamborghini and the future he and we believe in today."
