I spent a very enjoyable day on Saturday, chewing the fat with a bunch of elderly Mazda owners. It wasn’t the owners themselves who were getting on though – it was their cars. Organised by the Mazda Rotary Club, the event was simply a social, with everyone getting together to kick the year off.
Assembled were various Wankel-engined beasts that you simply never see anywhere else; when was the last time you saw a whole gaggle of first-generation RX-7s all together? Not one, but a complete gaggle! Well, three-quarters of one anyway.
That’s the beauty of the classic car scene in the UK; it’s thriving and evolving, all at the same time. There are more events than ever to go to, with an increasing number of cars attending that are barely out of warranty. But who cares if Elises and Imprezas are turning up to established classic car events in droves – isn’t it all about being sociable?
Last year I squeezed over 80 events into my year, and in 2007 I’m looking to do even more. Tell me which is your event of the year, whether it’s historic racing, an autojumble, a road run – or simply a static gathering in a field. I might just add it to my list.
I went to a Bristol Owners’ Club meeting last week. It was at a lovely pub in the South Downs. As I recall, the men all congregated in the bar, whilst the ladies amused themselves by polishing their Bristols.

You might incur the wrath of a certain Charis Whitcombe.
