Porsche 918 Spyder to be built

Porsche 918 Spyder
Porsche has confirmed plans to develop the 918 Spyder concept for the road in a limited series.

The 918 Spyder was first seen at the Geneva Motor Show 2010 back in March.

It's a mid-engined plug-in hybrid super-sports car concept said to 'define the Porsche Intelligent Performance philosophy.'

It has a powerful petrol-electric drivetrain offering CO2 emissions of just 70 g/km.

Porsche's decision reflects the overwhelmingly positive response from the public and customers to the Concept Study.

The prototype 918 Spyder enjoys fuel consumption of 94.1 mpg on the NEDC, combined with the performance of a super-sports car.

But the extremely efficient drivetrain technology still provides supercar-like performance, as expected of a Porsche.

Michael Macht, President and Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG, said; "Production of the 918 Spyder in a limited series proves that we are taking the right approach with Porsche Intelligent Performance.

"We will develop the 918 Spyder in Weissach and assemble it in Zuffenhausen. This is also a very important commitment to Germany as a manufacturing base."

Further product details of the 918 Spyder will be disclosed in the months to come.
