The car was created for racing in series based on the international FIA GT3 regulations, and succeeding the 911 GT3 Cup S.
Porsche says the main focus with this new car was to deliver even better driveability and even easier handling.
The GT3 R is powered by a six-cylinder 'boxer' engine of four-litres capacity, which delivers a maximum output of 480 bhp.
Power is transmitted to the rear axle by a sequential six-speed 'dog-type' gearbox.
The starting point in developing the 911 GT3 R, which weighs just 1,200 kg, was the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.
However, thanks to its increase in engine size by 200 cc, the GT3 R offers 30 bhp more than the Cup model.
Both cars are based on the 911 GT3 RS road car, which goes on sale in February next year.
Additional flared wheel arches front and rear bear clear testimony to the wider track of the GT3 R than on the former model.
The Porsche 911 GT3 R is making its world debut on 14 January 2010 at the Autosport International Show at the NEC in Birmingham.
The base price of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS is 279,000 Euros plus local sales tax/VAT.
