The traditional pick-up buyer has changed. Just as 4x4s are nowadays bought by drivers who never go off-road, you no longer have to be a farmer, or a builder, to buy a pick-up. Having an ostensibly functional vehicle is becoming a bit of a fashion statement. It's not yet cool to drive a van but arrive at the office - or take the kids to school - in a Nissan Navara and you could certainly score points. And that's before we even get to the practical advantages.
The buyers of pick-ups might have changed, but then so have the pick-ups themselves. It's the top-of-the-range models that people want and Nissan long ago noticed a trend emerging, each time they introduced upgrades to the model range. In Nissan's own words: "Whenever we added features from passenger cars - we were very successful. Whenever we added more power - we were very successful." Even the most recent, minor changes centre on comforting little extras; such as thicker carpets. This is partly because there's a whole new type of trendy urban buyer, snapping up the car-derived options, and partly because the more traditional buyer wants comfort and performance, too. It certainly helps with residual values.
So the Nissan Navara range now offers all the luxury, car-style goodies you could wish for, from a 'Double Cab' with proper rear seats, to sat nav, cruise control, air-con and heated leather seats. This has made the Navara a genuine - albeit rather less refined - alternative to an SUV. At a significantly cheaper price.
