Fiat look to build budget "world car"

The head of Fiat Auto has confirmed that the Italian carmaker plans to build a new low-cost world car in Brazil from 2009.

Fiat CEO, Sergio Marchionne, announced that that the new car will be a direct competitor for Renault's Dacia Logan range.

The new car would replace Fiat's aging Palio 'world car' platform. As well as Brazil, the new car might also be built in China, India and Turkey.

The new "world car" project is not tied-in to Fiat's engineering and marketing collaboration with Tata Motors, which is currently working on its own super-low cost '1-lakh' car in India.
